Over heating

Default Over heating

Only had my 2008 for a while, first major hot day here in Minneapolis, using the ac alot, the car thermostat all of a sudden jumped off the mark and then the coolent fluid boiled over. Refilled it and it doesn't leak so don't think it is a hose issue. Should I flush the system, is this expensive ?? suggestions welcome, thanks

Not expensive, hope you caught it in time. Refill with 50/50 premix coolant, not Dexcool.

Default over heating

Thanks for the response, so when I hit the panic button I put in x X x coolant, do you think I should drain it out and put in the 50/50 coolant. It over heated again on me yesterday also, do you think it is that I put in the wrong brand or is it maybe a bigger issue if so do you know a likely cause

Default Problem found

So it turns out that the fan doesn't work, is this common? the mechanic says the fan works but it's electric box that tells it to turn on that is broke. Apparently they don't come separate so I have to buy a fan and the box, over $400 dollars, does anyone know where the parts are sold separate or has anyone had a similar issue, thanks

hmmm... IMHO you might want to look thru the RAVE and check some of the suppliers. Being a country bumpkin I'm not sure if an LR2 is Freelander some years. The RAVE shows two electric fans behind the radiator, and a relay that the ECU turns on/off. But AB shows a fancy module for cooling fans that is like $400. If the relay is not built into the fans, seems like another relay could replace it. If fans are just turned on/off, and not variable speed, seems like one of the generic fans from the parts stores for about $70 would do the job. For a $400 part plus labor, I'd look at this as a DIY conversion to something else, or one of the parts guys (parting out Freelanders without front end damage is a small list), or salvage yard.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately I dont have the time or the know how to search for the separate part and install it. I.m having the coolant flushed and the oil changed and the fan/module installed for $1100, does that seem high. Love the car just feeling exspense in this one

We have all levels of expertise represented on the site, and are blessed by working pros who also participate. People maintain their vehicles by all known methods, from open check book at the dealership, "BOAT" technology at the indy shops (bring over another thousand), DIY in the garage, shade tree, or just dirt, using parts bought from dealer, on-line, fleaBay, parts dismantlers, auto parts stores, and wrestled with your own fingers from a donor vehicle at the junk yard.

Does it seem high? Yes, to me. But not to a senior manager of the XYZ company who travels six days a week and as a road warrior is only home a part of the weekends. If you go to a business, you are paying for their expertise, overhead, insurance, shop manager's college fund, environmental fees, shop supplies, shop chewing gum removal, etc. If you decide to jump into DIY, you'll find plenty of advice and coaching on this site. People will point out sources of supply, post pix of items, even tell you how they did it.

But I have always suspected that the factory manual set, called the RAVE, really meant that "Rovers A'int Very Economical". Encounters with the items pictured usually motivate guys to take up the DIY hobby.
