I just checked my LR2

I turned on the ignition without starting the engine and the Fuel Pressure was 0 PSI

Then I took a Slow Motion Video of the screen on my scan tool and after starting the video I stepped on the brake an pressed the start button to start the engine.

Note: this information is applicable to a cold start

Fuel pressure shot up to 67 PSI then dropped to 60 PSI then it dropped again to 55 PSI.

Total run time for the engine is about 20 seconds.

Here is what I would do if I were in your position.

0. Fill the tank and reset the MIL (clear the codes)

1. Verify on a cold start that the fuel pressure gets above 60 PSI (pressure should be at zero before starting and engine must be at the ambient temperature or colder)

2. Drive your LR2 but keep the Fuel tank Full (Fill up every day) does the light illuminate if the tank is full? (do this for a few hundred miles minimum or preferably at least 10X farther than you went to set the light before)

3. Continue driving but fill up at half a tank. Does the light turn on?

4. Continue driving but don't fill up until the fuel tank low light turns on. Does the check engine light turn on?

Good luck

Paul

2008 LR2 127,000 miles (Original Fuel Presser Sensor)
2010 S80 141,000 miles (Fuel Pressure Sensor replaced recently)

I can check the S80 on the weekend to confirm that it works the same as the LR2.

For the S80 I used the same Bosch part number as you did for your LR2.

Note: my battery failed hard on the S80 soon after the sensor failed, it is possible that a bad battery was causing erratic readings. When the battery failed I couldn't recharge it (no storage capacity) and it wouldn't even click the started solenoid. It failed really bad. I did check to make sure that all of the cells were still wet and they were. It was 4 years old but it was advertised as a 6 year battery.

I still have the sensor for the S80.

Take care

Paul

Ok thanks,

An update; I changed the fuel cap this morning and erased P0087 using the scanner. Drove around 50 miles and P0087 has not returned yet.

I had anyway planned to change the fuel cap (ordered from amazon few days back but received today) as it was in a dilapidated condition . In my opinion, fuel cap issues should not cause P0087 but only evap codes(such as P0457) so I do not think that is the issue however I will keep on driving and see if the code returns.

I am driving back home to Orlando this thursday from DC so I am double checking things before the long drive. When at home I will be a bit more adventurous in trying things.

Keep your speed at or below 65 MPH and use the throttle gently and you should be able to get really good fuel economy (assuming that you don't leave at rush hour)

I drove to LA and I got almost 27 MPG (as measured by Land Rover)

I started with a full tank and after 298 miles I had only used up 5/8 of it.

If you do this and fill up near the half tank it will provide useful information if the MIL comes on and when.

Good luck

Paul

OK, I have not seen the code after driving for another 44 miles. It seems it is clear for good (fingers crossed). It seems that it was required to be driven a bit. I did not do the battery reset.

I am not sure if it was the sensor or it was the gas cap. I do have the old gas cap and I am bit tempted to put it back and drive for sometime just to verify what triggered the code. I believe it should be sensor as gas cap should not impact delivery pressure.

That is good news.

You do want to make sure that the sock filter isn't clogged and sucking in air when the tank gets low.

Let us know if the MIL comes back and how much gas is in the tank at the time.

Good luck

Paul

PS for my Audi 2.0T I do occasionally get the P0087 but the failure mode is a subsystem that the LR2 doesn't have. For the Audi the code will show up when a part wears out and the engine is consuming a high volume of fuel (accelerating up a big hill). If the code doesn't come back for a month or two you should test your LR2 by accelerating up a big hill.

For last two days, I have been testing the LR2 in all sorts of accel and decel conditions (high accel on steep climbs). Also the car was refueled this morning. So it drove without P0087 for near 60 miles at very low fuel levels and than 40 miles at near full tank levels without P0087. I believe it is resolved for good. The fuel sensor (most likely) or the fuel cap did it.

A lesson learnt is that one needs to drive a bit before the computer resets its codes values and/or certain parameters that triggers the error, just removing the error code from ECM using the scanner will not work. I did not try a battery reset but that may have worked too.

My car is at near 195 k miles mark, I do believe that the fuel cap and the fuel sensor should be a planned replacement when the car hits 150k miles especially because these are such a low cost DIY items. I got both the parts from amazon and are OEM parts at 30 USD a piece installed with free labor.
