Hardest one to do as there is no access from the side to beat out the axle shaft.

i seperate the knuckle from the upper arm ballpoint

of course undue the axle nut at the end.

then I use a wedge shaped ball joint separater tool to wedge in between the diff case and the large can shsped part of the axle. You can also use a pry bar and try leveraging it, but an abrupt hit to separate is the most effective.

replace the seal on the diff before install.

good luck

I had to do this a couple of years ago. Sorry, I do not have step-by-step instructions, but my experience was the same as Abran - I remember needing to wedge a couple of prybars in between the end of the Diff Case and the Axle Shaft, and needed to give them both a pretty big hit, both at same time, and the Axle Shaft popped out. I don't think I had a large enough Ball Joint separator type tool at the time, however that would have been a better option than Prybars I think, so that the 'pressure' on both sides of the Axle Shaft was the same.

This s the tool I use. Get the claws against the can portion and use as a rocker pry bar.

Pry bar did not work for me. I used hammer and a piece of 2x4 against the half shaft case. As for ball joint separator , Harbour Freight unit works on upper control arm ball joint and steering arm ball joint, does not work on lower control arm as the fork is too narrow.

The driver side front has no room for the hammer/Driver technique.

If you are at the point of removing the axle I just did a front differential replacement this last weekend and this was the part that put the brakes on the flow of the whole project. The manual says to "release" the half shaft from the differential. Ya right.

Here is what I came up with and it took all of 60 seconds to pop it loose. Take a ratcheting tie down strap and wrap it around the back of the can and hook the other end onto a solid object. Ratchet until taught, climb under and take a brass punch or piece of wood and get on a corner of the can and give it a quick rap. Could not believe how much time I spent trying to pry and knock it loose before I tried this. From what I read, they need tension and a good tap. There are adapters for slide hammers that would work as well but I did not have one.

If you are looking for the entire process then use the LR3 Rave manual. It hops around a bit but has all the info for what you are doing.

Good luck!
