Default 2005 Land Rover LR3 Water Leak and Electrical Issues

I've had my LR3 for 2 years. 2005 102,520 miles. Recently my car was acting possessed, rado and a/c going on and off, doors locking and unlocking, hazard lights went on, etc, while driving and intermittently wouldn't start. Towed to mechanic and was told I needed a new CJB. When they went to replace it, said they found a major water intrusion and I should call insurance company. Mechanic replaced the CJB before I was told to take Land Rover dealership who diagnosed leak from sun roof and windshield and that my Instrument Cluster needed replacing as well. Car insurance claim covered CJB cost but said Instrument cluster was not connected, even though I was told my CJB was basically water logged from leak and alot of water was found under passenger side floor. I've spent $4000 and when I went to get my car it had suspension, transmission faults and a Brake light on my dash and radio volume wasn't working. Land Rover mechanic said I needed suspension work but I informed him I'd had front & back (both sides) replaced just 10,000 miles prior and that didn't make sense as prior to the electrical issues and water leak, my car had been working great. Was told to take to mechanic who replaced suspension and CJB because they weren't installed properly. He said radio was related to CJB. Upon calling the mechanic with this, I was told that he believed the water leak was causing my issues and shocked insurance didn't cover instrument cluster or total out my car. He said the water leak/damage was so bad that he felt it would cause long term issues that will uncover slowly. Simply I'm writing to beg for guidance... and help. I took my car back to Land Rover, after speaking to the original mechanic and insurance agents and now they are saying my oxygen sensor and brake light are the cause of the current faults, which keeps my car in a lowered state and it will be another $1500 to fix. Is this all due to the leak since I'd had bi issues prior or ? Note: There was one day that I started it up, all fault lights and messages were gone, suspension was working and radio. Functioned like it had before electrical issues. The next day upon start all faults and messages returned. Thank you so much

Hi annmarie2122...
I am not an experienced Land Rover LR3 owner, but have found out a few sad facts of owning one (2007 LR3 4.0 V6), still have not decided to keep it or not. Anyway , your electrical problems are usually (NOT always) due to water leaking in to electrical connectors from the defective sunroof/body drains from the "A" or "B" pillars, which Google will give you many hits/solutions usually relating to the sunroof "J" type 12mm elbow fittings which apparently rot due to age. I think I am about to try to fix this exact same problem, because in my case high pressure car washes cause water to enter the electrical connectors which were inconveniently placed directly in conflict with the poorly designed/manufactured drain "J" elbows on the passenger side (North America) of our car. Electrical issues are apparently the major issues with Land Rovers of any ilk, the solution is to find someone who can deal with and permanently resolve them, unfortunately very difficult in today's "toss a part at it" society. I hope Google is your friend on this...
Eric...

There are three common water entry points:

Sunroof drains, there are FOUR. Two front, two aft. Front are well documented, rears are not so I made a thread. In short they clog, then the constant water/dirt at the rubber end rots it until there is a disconnect. Poor design. You can replace the entire hose or just cut and put on new ends with a push connector. The ends themselves are not available. I bought Sport drain hoses that worked. New hoses have different ends that will not clog and a nylon insert for enforcement. If only one side was done, the other MUST be done too. The rears on mine were actually in great shape.

A-pillar leak, a kit can be purchased that does both sides for $20 or new style exterior a-pillars can be installed, they have updates.

Windshield cowl. As you had replaced, they warp and water can leak inside. But even after replacement, they can leak again due to poor design. Sealant should be used but I doubt a dealer would use it. The easiest was to check is by pulling the cabin filter. if tis wet, its still leaking.

Your ongoing issues are likely related to corrosion issues in connector and splices. But you *could* have multiple issues, so never assume. The only way to resolve this would be to rip things all apart and make sure everything is good. Carpet needs to be DRY underneath. You can pull it up easily enough on your own. One key issue is remote failure, that is caused by a splice at the passenger side rocker that corrodes. Easy to fix.

Going back to your issue specifically, it is VERY possible the JCB connectors on back are not installed correctly. When I repaired my drains, I had a heck of a time getting the connectors on the back seated properly. The car would throw a huge fit and I thought I broke something. After several attempts I finally seated them. Your brake switch could be faulty, a few LR3 owners like myself keep a spare in the vehicle. You can get Ford ones that are a direct fit for a very low price. Have to google which one, I forget.

Useless fact #75, the Ford replacement Motorcraft SW6572 Brake Light Fail Switch is what I replaced mine with. The OEM Land Rover part is somewhat more expensive...
