2008 LR3 key FOB issue
This is my first time posting here. I have a 2008 LR3 HSE with 64,000mi that I have owned for about a year. I just started having what appears to be an electrical issue with the vehicle. A couple weeks ago I started having a problem opening the car with the both key FOBs. They won't work at all for the first unlock almost every day. The security light blinks and the alarm goes off when I manually unlock and open the door. Once I put the key in the ignition the car starts with no issues. Once started the keys work fine until the car has been sitting for about twelve hours and then the keys don't work again. I don't know if these other issues are related but right after I started having this problem one day the GPS and the radio/cd player stopped working during one start. I tried to restart and they still didn't work. I drove for about a half hour and tried the restart again and they worked. On a separate occasion I was able to unlock the door of the car but when I put the key in the ignition I was unable to start the car. I left the car and came back about five minutes later and it started up. Both of these problems have only happened once. A couple things that I noticed but may be irrelevant are that the unlock issue started when the nights started dropping below freezing and I have been noticing a slight burnt smell but I thought it might have been due to turning the heat on in the car. Also, I have been hearing a clicking noise coming from the passenger side of the vehicle that has been pretty regular.
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

That burn odor and clicking sound like a relay issue, but I'm no expert.
Have the battery load tested to make sure it isn't a low-voltage situation. Sitting for a long time with a stuck relay might drain an iffy battery enough to cause some of those symptoms.

Check battery; lots of electronics on these vehicles that need a good power supply.
The FOB's have batteries that are charged when in the ignition. If you don't drive it for long periods of time, they may get drained or short trips don't charge them enough. One of my FOBs wasn't working, so I replaced the battery (requires a little FOB surgery and soldering) and it works fine.
There's a pair of wires that run along the front passeneger sill, under the carpet. Others have reported that these wires can get wet and corrode, leading to a break/short and failure of the FOBs. Search the LR3 sub-forum and some of this info should come up in some of the older threads.
When does the clicking noise occur? What are you doing and what is the vehicle doing when you hear it?
Check the engine compartement to see if anything is leaking/dripping on a hot exhaust manifold for the burnt smell. Coolant always flows through the heater core; don't know if using the heat would cause a burnt smell since it always has hot coolant inside the core.

I don't think that it's the batteries in the FOBs. I haven't had the batteries tested but before I manually open the car they both don't work. Once I start the car with one they both work again. Also, in doing research I found the issue with the wires under the passenger sill was in the prior year LR3s. I am going to pull it apart to check though.
I was thinking maybe it's the receiver for the keyless entry but bamaboy might be on to something with the stuck relay draining the battery.
I only notice the clicking noise when I'm driving and not operating any electronics...turn signals, windshield wipers etc. It seems to be completely random. The noise does seem to come from under the glove compartment.

I did this hard reset and it worked

if hard reset does not work then the wires in the spill plates are rusted. In my LR3 they were near the Drivers side Passenger door and on the passenger side they were on the passenger side near the seat belt connection in the spill plate. Try are hard to manipulate out but can save ya a few bucks. you are Looking for 2 green wires with white strip and go to a single wire wraped with Blue tape or black tape. Cut and resplice wrap with electrical tape and your good to go, if this does not work then it's the RF transmitter which was my problem as well as the wires we rusted.

Dealer will charge $1800 to fix. I could also be the RF Receiver located in the roof moulding accessed once you remove the overhead light in the passenger side. Local british mechanic only charged me $275 to fix.

Just and FYI, I ordered a key from an outfit in CA. Another fellow locally also ordered one. He got his cut, and determined that it would not be programmable. I contacted the company and arranged to ship the key back, which I did. Months later, I still had not received a refund, I contacted them. They insisted they did not receive it. I sent them proof of delivery, they still wanted to argue. Finally they claimed I had cut the key, so they would not refund me, which I did not. I have contacted them every few months ever since, and never received a refund, only BS, stalling and ignoring my requests. I would suggest, ordering it through a dealer or online dealer, but NOT these third party keys. I would suggest avoiding doing business with this outfit. It has not been a year and a half, and I'm out my 129.00 + shipping.
