Default 3rd Party Navigation Options

Been looking at options for navigation for my SE. I’m thinking the best option is going to be an iPad mini w/ the GPS capability and one of the apps out there. Thinking I can basically just place it over the stock Nav cubby using a RAM mount. Curious what advice and experience you folks have, including hardware and app choice.

I went for the head unit upgrade since my CD player died but a tablet is a good option, i was using a Nexus7 for a while in a bracket i made that held it in the cubby hole.
Was crude but did the job, i also made an alloy sunshield like a binnacle to protect it from the sun and prevent glare on the screen.
