Default Air Comp relocation questions.

SO...... Next upcoming project after I do my rear struts today is the compressor. Mine is the factory and being a 06 that makes this comp 12 years old. (Do I get a prize or something from the land rover gods?) Im going to preventively replace it with an AMK. I want to relocate the compressor from under the truck to inside one of the rear storage compartments. Why would I want to deal with the noise and the other downsides? Well... I make a lot of water crossing where I currently live. Its the wet season here and many of the spots I go to for work. (I repair and install electric fencing for local horse owners) Its not uncommon to get through large puddles and creeks and streams. Not to mention i'm going to college in florida and I imagine water crossings are common there too. Point being I don't like the idea of my new 600 dollar compressor being drug through the water and mud. Also due to the risk of impacts from a log, rock, ect.

So the plan is to relocate it to the boot area. Mounting it is the simple part as I borrowed a blown one from my indy shop to see if it would fit. I have a few questions though. Are there any electrical concerns from extending the wires a few feet (4-5 i'm guessing) I know my way around electronics but I want to make sure that the added resistance isn't too much. Second is heat, does this need to be a concern in one of those storage boxes? I was toying with the idea of using a computer fan to blow cooler air into the box. If I did this I could also add some noise insulation. I plan to extended the airline with braided steel lines. 3rd anything i'm missing that I havent though of?

Thanks!

Yes you forgot one thing. WHY??? Man, you sure are a crazy hobbyist (cool!), or you like pain. Do you not think LR hadn't thought of water crossings? Go watch some youtube vids to alleviate your concerns. Water is not a big issue for the comp down there. And if you're really worried about impacts from debris you probably have bigger things to worry about, most notably how you got yourself in that situation anyway.
Perhaps get yourself some rock sliders that offer a bit more protection in that area. The case surrounding the AMK is remarkably stout.

If you proceed on this, I'd be less concerned with relocating the electrics and more so with the added length in the air lines, but I really have no idea if adding length will affect run time to charge the tank, etc.

To be frank... I like doing projects likes this lol. Im also extreme visual person, cars make sense to me because all of the peices have a job and fit together. So projects like this I genuinely find fun and entertaining. On accident I fully discovered the capabilities of the 3. During one crossing I found a hole in the middle that took me much deeper than what is my comfort zone. The water was barley below the air intake and man was there a brown stain on my seat. I learned my lesson... when in doubt walk it out. A snorkel (even though it doesn't turn a rover to a submarine) is in my future for certain.

...the snorkel doesn't add wading depth capability, it's more of a raised air intake. You still have diff breathers to think about. As for the compressor, if you make a good bow wave you shouldn't really have to worry about it, plus it can take it. As for impact/abuse if you get the right rock sliders they will protect it.

It's cool that you like doing projects like this....but maybe pick one that will bear more fruit.

Yes I totally understand what the snorkel is for. My reasoning behind it was as I said I came real close to the intake. I never intend to want to do that again but it seems like a good safety net if you ever go just a bit too deep. Im surprised that this isn't a common mod... I have seen kits and other threads on the project but I trust y'all you got more experience than me!

I’ve seen a few that have been mounted on the roof rack with a motorized telescoping pole.

cool mod for sure.

JK. If you want to do it, go for it. Just make sure you get all your preventative maintenance up to date first!
