Air Compressor Overheating?
How can I tell if the air compressor is overheating? Today I went to put the vehicle in "off road" height and half way up I got the ping and red suspension light, then the normal height only message. I turned the vehicle off and restarted and it has seemed fine for the next 70 miles I have been. I could not duplicate when I got home so I took the cover off the compressor area and halfway took the compressor out. It was hot to the touch but none of the other parts were. I did notice the compressor runs about 2 minutes today and it "clicked" about 5 times after start up.
I have read where the release valve sticks open on these and also where the air dryer may get clogged.
It appears to be all original parts and nothing is listed as replaced on the dealer service records I pulled when I bought it. The vehicle now has 115,000 miles.
Should I just go ahead and bite the bullet by buying a new compressor?
Should I try to replace the valve and air dryer first?
Or should I just keep on driving and wait to see if it gets worse. This is the most computerized vehicle I've had. Could it just be electrical fluke?
I'm just trying to be ready and have all my ducks in a row.
So far I've had it a month, put 3500 miles on it and have done the following services myself
Service front differential (royal purple 75w-90)
Service Rear differential (royal purple 75w-90) probably be replacing later...had water in it.
Service Transfer case (LR OEM Fluid)
Replaced air Filter
Replaced cabin air filter
I was just about to buy spark plugs and change them out and then I got the suspension fault today.

I'm getting something similar at 100k miles. I replaced the desiccant in my dryer this weekend in hopes it will help. I'm in an arid climate, but found it spent (clear in color). You are in Florida, so I can only imagine a desiccant change would help. I simply bought a quart of orange silica gel beads off of e-bay based on a number of posts on the subject. Do a search for compressor refresh with duckduckgo.com and see if you can find a post (a forum other than this one) that has pics. Real easy dryer rebuild with great pics. There are fabric filters on both ends of the dryer that clog with dust. I blew them out with compressed air (outside so I didn't breathe the dust) and rotated them to increase flow. The other thing you can do is buy the refresh kit JPO500010. I haven't gotten it yet, since I wasn't sure my compressor was old enough to require it, but I'm going to get one and replace it in my 'free' time to try to extend the life.... a replacement kit runs @ $800 at Miami Rovers! Good luck!
Thanks, I think after taking mine apart I'll just order a complete assembly. Then I would at least be upgraded to the new AMK. Mine is the older Hitachi. I may rebuild the old one and keep as a spare if I don't sell it. I'll try to rebuild it either way. BTW the dryer decissent was almost all white but none it was powder yet. I'm still getting the amber light and suspension fault randomly after start up. Restarting still clears it.
Do you have the factory nav system? If so, put it into 4x4 view and look at what the wheels are doing when the vehicle is raising. There is a bar above and below the four vehicle wheels. I believe the bar will flash if the sensor is misbehaving. That would indicate that a wheel sensor needs to be calibrated or replaced.
No factory nav. The fault is still random for now. Even goes a couple days at a time with no faults. Then I will get it the next 3 or 4 times I start the vehicle. Then a couple more days with nothing.
