My 2008 lr3 hse currently has 265-60-18s and I’m looking at putting more aggressive all terrains on. What size is recommended? Thank you.

 

275/65/18 is pretty much the limit, and slightly past, for a stock truck. That would be 0.4" wider than what you have and 1.6" more in diameter. At this size, you may have slight rubbing up front and lily some rubbing on the rear wheel well linters in back. You may have to remove the rear liners and do some sheet metal bending. But you will have to take a heat gun and reshape the liners a little, which can be done without removal. I have a thread below. If you want to go larger, then you have to do a little more work with strut spacers, etc. Also I will note that not all tire makes actual dimensions are the same for the same sized tires. Mud terrains, for example, tend to run larger because of the bigger lugs. But even still, two A/Ts of the same size form different companies may fit a little different.

Also need to take into account if you want the spare under the rear or on a rack or wheel carrier, 265/60/18 is probably the safest size and anything larger likely wont fit underneath. I run 265/65/18 Falken Wildpeak's and the spare is jammed underneath deflated yet i have heard that a BFG in the same size fits easily.

 

Thanks for responses. Just got back from hawaii trip and rented new keep 4xe with really nice AT tires. They were wide, aggressive and ride quality was so much better than I expected. My son kept telling me my favorite rig to drive, lr3, needs tires like the 4xes. However doesn’t sound like it will be that straight forward to replicate on the lr3. Only off road I do is when I’m searching for new fishing spots along river bank, or pulling loading/launching boat down slippery ramps. Looks like AT’s in 265-60-18s will be good next step vw All seasons.

 

I will be buying new offroad tires for my newly acquired 2008 LR3 later this year so I am interested in all these discussions. Would like to avoid the expense of a swing away carrier for now and therefore need to be able to stow new tire underneath.

What is the diameter of your Falken Wildpeak tires?
Does anyone know the largest diameter tire that will fit underneath? I have been considering 32 inch tires.

My spare 265/60R18 WIldpeak fits underneath easily - my opinion is this is the most practical upsized tire choice
265/65R18 can be crammed underneath when deflated, but that's another step before you can use the spare if needed

But the 65 in a Wildpeak is not XL rated, which I feel is a must for the LR3
Maybe they make an E in that size? Not sure.

Any bigger than 265/65R18 (or equivalent) will not fit underneath.
This is about 31.5" - but like Dakota says, some makes might fit better than others - even if identical spec.

 

I just picked up some 275/65 r 18's BFG Ko2s. I have them on my suburban so if they don't fit without a lot of modifications I can use them still as a spare set. I really like them in the snow. Just have to find some 18 inch rims.

 

I've not heard of them not being an LT construction to be a problem, they seem pretty tough.

 

What fits underneath has become a moot point as I have discovered you cannot access the spare tire release with the 3rd row seats folded down. I plan to install a storage box setup and fridge as I currently have in my P38 so the seats have to be down. Looks like I will be installing a Terrafirma swing away tire carrier soon.

 

I just checked Falken specs on their site

I'm surprised that the load rating, and max psi (and no entry for ply rating) are almost identical between 60 and 65
I wonder how one gets XL and the other gets SL designation?

Maybe I won't rule them out in 65 for my next set
If anyone has insight why one is XL and one not, I'd love to hear it
