You will lose steering wheel audio controls if you have them and there wont be any canbus integration otherwise its literally a 15min job to change the stereo.

 

what specifically is the CANBUS integration?

I have the radio in mine with the amp. No video etc.

What important part of the overall stereo does this play? What happens if it’s removed.

For one you will lose the sat nav and 4x4 info, clock on the dash and anything that requires the stereo to work and control.
Standard LR loom doesnt have a normal power feed so you need to piggy back it from the cig socket or other accessory feed, you can get a harness with amp integration.

Buy a double din unit from "ebay" that is for Land rover discovery 3 and it will come with the correct harness to fit to the original radio plugs (at least mine did) I purchase a separate rear camera that fitted to one of the number plate lights and ran it to the new unit and now have rear camera. I purchased a kit from the UK that had some special connector (I think for the antenna) and a surround to finish it off. Like has been said installation is simple.
