We had been having trouble with the A/C cooling inconsistently, but yesterday was the final straw on a 5-mile trip. The belt started squealing and would only stop squealing after turning off the poorly performing A/C. When we got to our destination a few miles later, we noticed fluid coming from under the Rover, which I later determined to be coolant. We returned to drive home several hours later, and in a few miles, we noticed a gradual rise in water temperature to around 240 degrees F, as indicated by my Scan Guage II. We slowed down to drop the temperature and made it home.
This morning, I added more coolant to the max cold-fill level, though it didn't appear to be all that low.
Now, is it possible that these issues are related?
Or, is it time for a new A/C compressor and cooling system overhaul?
It does sound like two issues. I took it for a spin around the block yesterday, and the pulley was making quite a bit of rattling noise. I didn't have it out long enough to get water temp past 100 F.
