Hi
CMB6S has given a good answer on how ours tools work.

LR uses SDD and now the current version is 141.07. SDD is updated regularly but the ECU firmware version are not automatically updated. For exemple a LR3 which is at least 6 years old, the firmwares are mature.

We use the latest firmware available for each ECU that we provide

What is the motivation for updating an ECU's firmware if it's running fine?

There probably isn't much motivation if it's running fine, but define "running fine". The 6 speed ZF transmission in my LR3 doesn't seem nearly as refined or shift as well as the 5 speed ZF in my Range Rover despite the fact that the Range Rover was more abused in its previous life, has more miles, and is two years older.

In addition, I feel like the LR3 tranny never wants to stay in a gear where I have any "get up and go". I almost have to floor the gas pedal for the tranny to downshift. This is especially a problem when I come to a rolling stop and it wants to stay in 2nd gear. That's fine if I'm rolling at 10mph, but if I am literally at 1 or 2 mph (anything other than a complete stop with backwards rocking motion), then 2nd gear doesn't have enough "umph" to get going. And in order to get it to downshift to 1st, I have to almost floor it, which results in a not so smooth shift and acceleration.

Perhaps this is normal operation, but I'm crossing my fingers and hoping a software update will make this tranny a little more refined...

Thanks Eric-- I'll probably pick one up and see how it works..

There were a ton of updates in the early years on shifting, engine, etc. to resolve various issues. I imagine there are a lot of various engine tunes out there... which may account for the huge array of mileage reports we get.

I'd love to get two vehicles side by side, one that gets 10mpg and one that gets 22 and figure out what's what... I know equipment, tires, etc contribute.. but I suspect there is more too it.
