Costs for Research
These are just approximate estimates I gathered to help me when I was researching my 2008 V8 SE. I went straight to the dealer to get conservative pricing and then shopped around for independent shops.
This is by no means a comprehensive list; it's just a list of things I wanted to know and things I've run into. But if it helps in your research, great!
Independent shop:
Pro: usually not as expensive
Con: No loaners while truck is in shop
Pro: can sometimes bring my own parts in (TPMs sensors)
Con: can't guarantee part (which is understandable)
Pro: honest and direct with no pretense
Con: sometimes lacking in social skills
Pro: everyone in the shop drives some kind of rover, so they have a tribal body of knowledge
Con: everyone in the shop drive some kind of rover, so they have opinions
Dealers:
Pro: Oodles and oodles of attention and patience, and clean handshakes, and guys who look like they've stepped out of a Nordstrom ad.
Con: usually more expensive
Pro: access to manufacturer's info and parts lists...no bootlegged foreign exploded views lacking translations
Con: (at least where I live) they don't drive their product, so they don't often know first hand what I'm talking about.
Pro: loaner while truck is in shop gives me a chance to see what's on the showroom floor (and usually why I'm sticking to my LR3)
Con: none really...
Okay...here are my lists...
Pre-purchase inspection: $150.00
Tire list:
1 set of Pirellis plus 1 for full size spare: $1,365 parts and labor
not a lot of variety available for 255/60r18
Optional list:
1 set of TPMS sensors: $950.00 parts and labor
if done when tires are also changed, not as expensive
Preventative and Maintenance list:
Regularly scheduled maintenance: $150 - $500
Fuel Injection Rail Cleaning: $300.00
Brake Fluid Flush: $300.00
Oil Flush: $300.00
Rotate every 6k miles: $175
(I ran 20k miles on tires and never once rotated/aligned tires. They still wore evenly...amazing)
Brakes: $1200
Oh sh-- list:
Air Suspension: $2000.00/set
Lower Control Arms: $2000.00
Transmission sleeve: $1200.00
Random list:
Upper glove compartment: $350 parts and labor
3rd row seat latch, right-hand or left-hand: $350 parts and labor
Insurance costs:
Approximately $115/month
And with all this info, I sill purchased my truck, and have not had a single regret.
Happy researching!
