10-4 Dakota. Glad someone knows what I am talking about. I will give what you say a shot. And you’re right, at face value, it does seem counter intuitive and it is also hard to not want to give more throttle.

I will add that feel engine/trans temps come into play also. If you are running hot it seemed to me like it wanted to kick in more to prevent overheating. Also I forgot to mentioned, I hate DSC.

LOL, not sure if you mentioned that you hate DSC anywhere else in this thread, but point well taken.

What are you using to monitor your trans temp?

Okay, thanks for clarifying. I have not had an issue with engine power cutting out with the DSC deactivated. I also tend to choose one gear (usually 2nd) for long, steep hill climbs though, applying ample and steady throttle throughout. Not sure this matters but my '05 has the locker and TC almost never activates, so I'd presume DSC would also be less active. My '06 relies a lot more on TC.

GAP tool at times. But really it was just knowing I was hammering it at times and seemed like when things were cooking a bit it came up a lot more. So I could be wrong, not sure. Just seemed like it.

I agree that you likely have traction control engage less than what us non-locked fellows do. I’ve been looking in the ARB just for the rear for this reason. There was also a coiled defender 90 (newer) in this group, and he was definitely walking the obstacles easier than me. I was attributing this to the rear e-locker, but I don’t know what else about the defender is better for traction control than my LR3. He also basically had on street tires compared to my ATs to add insult to injury. I was in manual 1, but I will try manual 2 in addition to the things Dakota mentioned. I need to understand better what the car is looking for.

I meant to say with DSC deactivated....but I think you got the idea. Very hard to say what is causing your experience. I don't think I've had the engine-cutting happen to me since maybe 2007 before I got more diligent about inhibiting DSC. Since then it's never happened that I can remember.

....they sell a newer "Defender" with coils and a rear locker? I thought for sure you'd need EAS for that. Hmmm....kinda cool. I wish the D90 had a more squared off front end and a frame (so that it had enough rigidity for a topless option) and I'd be more interested. As it were they seem more suited for the Kardashians.

They do, I talked with the guy quite a bit. I watched him go down one obstacle where you wanted more clearance, and I was thicking "why isn't he in off road mode?". Got to talking to him after we all got down, and I asked him why he didn't raise up his suspension. He said he bought it that way, it is the lower costed option, with the 4 cylinder engine. But I think standard they come with e-locker in the rear and center locking diff of course all computer controlled. I guess if I don't know if the terrain response system is "smarter/faster" than the LR3. But he has all the same modes.
