What types of engines did LR ship on the LR3, I have an older Disco II and would like to recommend a LR3 to a friend of mine... but IIRC there was a BMW motor in the LR3 (like my 2002 7 series) and that engine is like a giant clock... if anything went wrong I wouldn't want to fix it.

I think that in the US there were only 2 gasoline engine choices:
1. 4.4 liter V8 derived from the 4.2 liter Jaguar AJ V8
2. 4.0 liter V6 from Ford

Other markets also had a turbo diesel V6 available

Oh, and I think only the Range Rover used a BMW engine for a single generation. No BMW engines in the LR3.

No. The BMW engine you're probably thinking of was used on the '03 , '04, and '05 Range Rovers in the period where BMW owned Land Rover. They used the M62TU engine (basically the M62 w/Vanos timing) found on the X5, 5 series, 7 series, etc. It's a very nice engine, but has a few issues with the design. Specifically, it has some plastic timing chain guides which can break apart over time and cause issues. It also has an overly complex and failure prone PCV system which can cause excessive oil pressure when it goes wrong. IMHO, the cooling system seems to be more failure prone that most as well. The Vanos system tends to develop issues over time which can lead to a rattle at startup (normally due to valves that go bad and allow oil in the top of the engine to drain down when it shouldn't). This is rarely anything to worry about... just annoying.

Anyway, the LR3 actually had the Jaguar AJ41 engine. Very reliable and very few issues that I've heard of. It was incorporated into the Range Rover lineup in '06 and can be found in all 3 models (LR3, RRS, and Full Size RR) from '06-'09.

Thats good info on the BMW engine, I purchased a 2003 745Li.. to me its kind of a disposable car if something drastic goes wrong with it. But I will take a look at the issues you described and see if there are any issues (I am a pretty good wrench.. but I wouldn't dig too deep on that engine).

 

LR3 and RRS sport never got the BMW engine. Only the full size.

And the engine in your 2003 745Li isn't the same one they used in the Range Rover. BMW ditched that one in 2001 while RR carried it to 2005.
