Default Engine Revved High at start up and when put into drive

2006 Range Rover Sport 4.4 liter V-8, 29,000 miles. The engine has been running great! Today I drove to a lunch meeting. After the meeting I started the truck and it was revving high, idle was kind of like when starting on a cold morning, maybe a tad higher. I was a bit preoccupied and put the truck into reverse, foot on the brake as I normally do. Idle was high enough that the truck started moving backwards when I put it in reverse, even with my foot on the brake. I pressed the brake harder and the truck stopped backing up, but it seemed to rev even higher. It seemed like the throttle was stuck on. I turned the ignition off and put it back in park. I started it again a few seconds later and idle was normal. This was a real safety issue. Any idea what is going on? Has anyone experienced this type of issue again.

thanks Phil

Wait...29,000 miles? Is that a typo?

No typo. Long story. Sat from 2007 to last year. Phil

I'd start by cleaning the throttle body and reset engine adaptions.

I have a 2006 LR3. Mine would rev at high levels and was racing while idle. It was a very hard start and would stall sometimes. About two months ago I did a full cleaning of the Mass Air Flow Sensor and Throttle Body.

After cleaning those, the idle sounds much better. I would give that a try first.
