EPB right side lockup while driving
Driving down the highway at around 55-60 mph. Steering wheel started to vibrate. I wondered if I had a loose wheel or bearing. Slowed to a stop and then restarted down the road. Same thing. Finally arrived at destination about 3-4 miles further and the right rear wheel was stinking. I went straight to the forums and felt like the EPB was to blame. I wondered whether I’d be able to drive home. But upon restarting and heading home the symptom disappeared. Is my EPB haunted? I don’t want to replace it if it’s not broken. Can I just back the brake shoes off far enough that they won’t re-engage like that again? Any more insights are highly appreciated.
I still don’t have a firm answer as to why this happens, but while installing my new brakes last week I backed off the shoes as far as possible and left them that way. I tried to order a rebuild kit, but they are currently unavailable from Atlantic British and a handful of other sources.
I had a similar experience with my LR3 and fought EPB adjustment throughout, same as you. It turned out the rubber brake hose had degraded inside and was making a 1-way valve, keeping pressure in the caliper, thus dragging the brakes. I even threw a couple new calipers and slotted rotors at the problem before changing the hose, which eventually fixed it. Good luck and report back please.
