I have not done it yet, but I was myself planning to drill a small hole (1.5" or so) in the bumper cover right above the metal real bumper at a corner. Then on the metal bumper weld on something to thread in a rigid 16" pole which the flag pole would attach to. I want the rigid bit to prevent the flag pole from whipping into the headlight cover or edge of the hood. When not in use a hold cover could snap in place or simply leave it as it. Came to mind when I decided I need to mount two short poles in front of the grille for winch rope storage when on the trails - hate winding that thing back in every time.
This is for a much heavier antenna mount, but the process could work for a light flag as well It is mounted on top of the metal "bumper"
I am looking for some pictures of it tore apart and aill update when I find them.
That is exactly what I was picturing but for a flag more to a corner. But for my winch I plan to use that exact spot on each side. Then I can loop the cable around them when wheeling on the trails.
Fantastic. This is probably the best solution, I’ll make mine threaded so I can remove the post when not in use. I’ll need to figure out a “cap” to cover up the hole when not in use.
thanks for the photos. Did your rig come with the factory winch? Or did you source it from somewhere?
I would recommend a threaded pipe with a floor flange mounted on the top of the bumper as I did. My problem is the antenna is 9 feet long and weighs 12 pounds so any pipe large enough to support that had a fllow flange that was too big to fit under the bumper cover. My pipe is 1 1/4 inch dia if you go with a 1/2 or 3/4 in pipe you should be fine. as for the "cap", I would recommend a rubber gasket that matches the size of hole you drill with a hole saw or drill bit.
I got the winch from Devon 4x4 in the UK. I would say, that unless you need a new factory winch, such as a G4 build or some such, I would not recommend one because they are super stupid expensive, almost impossible to find, and come with a steel cable. the kit came in a 2 x 2 x 3 ft wooden crate that weighed 94 kg. (you need a scientific calculator to work the formula to even guess the shipping cost) If you need a winch (anything that is not a mall crawler needs a winch) there are many other cheaper easier winch and winch mounts out there now.
