Doug, nice Rover and cool pics...where is that? Looks like it would be (more) fun after some rain!

Don, good point, I'll re-tool the classifications. Oh, and I'm not saying "not a Rover" but rather "not a Discovery" or more generally "not a/an <insert model>"

1. Any changes conform to available items from factory = STOCK
2.Change tire size/types or bolt on accessories, etc = NOT STOCK
3. Changes to suspension using IIDTool or rod-mod, etc = SLIGHTLY MODIFIED
4. Changes including hardware that improve performance reasonably but are mostly non-mechanical (like spacers or changes that are not OEM but might be offered via OE option (like a rear locker but NOT LR or coil springs but not LR) = HEAVILY MODIFIED
5. Changes to drivetrain or suspension like gearing or
lockers or major suspension change or engine = NEW MODEL TYPE

pic2: Lake Havasu AZ
pic3: Mojave Desert CA

I realize now that the pics look boring with the LR on flat ground - but I couldn't take pics while driving over the fun stuff! haha

I'm too novice for the slick rain/mud stuff - harder to come by in CA anyway!

Nothing you can do to a D3/LR3 will stop it being a Rover, bar a full drivetrain swap which will never happen to a road going vehicle it will always be a Rover.

So if I throw a CLD and a couple of truetracs in an otherwise stock 2002 or 2003 D2 it's no longer a Land Rover Discovery 2? I can't get on board with that.

I'm far from a purist. I tend to view stock as just a starting point. Stock was designed to meet a broad spectrum of needs. Once I have a vehicle I begin to customize and modify to suit my specific needs.

I'm pretty much going to stick to my original delineation - until you build a custom chassis I'm pretty much going to still call it a Rover.

Agree still a Rover. Again I didn't mean to say otherwise....but get into the gearing or suspension mechanicals and it's not "a Discovery" per se.

CLD?

If that's a center locker then I'd say yeah, still a D2 because they came with one for most of their production run.

... but throw in lockers front and rear too, on Portal axles and lift it 5" and hell no it's no Disco!!!

Once again, I didn't say it was not a Land Rover, it's just not a Discovery anymore, in my opinion. My experience around modified cars is not pertinent to the discussion. It would help; however, if you actually read my premise.

I said it above and I will say it again: yes still a LAND ROVER. No longer a Discovery.
