Exclamation Leak from behind the transfer case, proper ID.

I just picked up a silver 2006 LR3 SE with 100k miles and evidence off heavy offroad use. I caught most things on the inspection, but a couple new things are creeping up.

After lower control arms and various other front suspension repairs, I was under the car to identify which compressor I have, and I see a fair amount of grease/oil thrown around the place. It wasn't there a week ago.

First I want to confirm I have my under car anatomy correct, it's the transfer case im looking at right...

You can see a ring of discarded fluid, and when I put my finger in there there is a fair amount or grease (i say grease because it's quite thick).

So as a point of reference I rolled under the wifes LR3, and it looks much better. I have to dig through her repair records, as hers looks to have been repaired/replaced.

I'll be taking it into the shop, the car has an extended warranty that expires in 2weeks, and so far it's failed to cover almost anything... But maybe my luck will change.
If it's not covered it will be a diy, anyone have experience on this repair/issue?

Yes, That is the T case.

Looks like grease coming from the driveshaft. Are you sure it wasn't there before, maybe somebody lubed it up?

Ha, it's the AMK, despite the IID tool saying the flash on board was Hitachi. Not sure if they never flashed it at the dealer the PO had it repaired at, or if the read was in error, flashed it to AMK, no noticeable difference.

compressor

Ref. someone greasing it up, I guess that's possible, it was in for the suspension work and overall check, that never crossed my mind. Is that "normal" to do?

Normal? Not sure. But was the work done at LR or an Indy shop?

You never know

Indy shop, would be great if that's all it is, the timing certainly lines up. I'll give them a call, thanks for the idea, certainly makes me feel better for now. I'd like to drive the car, not just work on it and drop it at the shop!
Looking at this thread http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/6-r...-teardown.html and how the TCase is setup, there is no obvious way for fluid to be coming out of the tcase, so maybe it is just exterior grease as you mention.

In my opinion, it's not the t case. It looks very clean.

Of course I am no expert. But I do own 2 and have parted out 2, and have done 2 Trans swaps and 3 Trans services. If that means anything.

Looks to me, at least from the pics, more like the front driveshaft CV joint is failing. I don't think you can get just the CV, but the whole driveshaft is fairly easy to replace. If it's a street truck you can use aftermarket but if it's for off-road use I'd stick with OEM. And no, there is no lube point for the CV on the driveshaft.

I didn't even think of that, I was figuring someone tried to lube it even though I know there is no zerk fitting. That sounds more likely.

I dunno. The spray pattern on that grease in the first picture indicates it's across the car, left to right. If it was from the CV joint, it would be more of a front to back spray pattern. Besides, the CV boots I've had fail certainly haven't resulted in a pattern that nice... it's more like every thing is just covered is nasty grease... everywhere.

EDIT: Oh, DRIVESHAFT CV. My bad. That could certainly be a possibility.
