Default Looking to buy a 2006 or 2007 LR3

I'm also looking into a 2004 discovery, but posted that in the other forum on here.

So what I'm trying to decide is what common issues are out there. I've read that the brakes go quick (not too strange for its size), water leaks due to leaves (kinda weird), differential issues and other not to scary things. I currently have a BMW 330i and do all of the work on it myself (brakes, all fluid changes, coolant system, etc.) and am wondering does anyone have experience working on these themselves. I know that European cars can become very expensive to maintain, but I also know that I've saved thousands upon thousands of dollars doing my own repairs on my bimmer as opposed to taking it to the dealership.

I read the brake thread on here, seemed almost identical to my BMW. But what about other common things such as:

Oil Change
Differential Fluid
Brake Fluid Flush
Transmission Fluid Change (Filter as well)
Coolant System
Belts
Spark Plugs
...
you get the point

If this isn't a vehicle that I will be able to work on myself, I don't think it would be the right vehicle for me (although it is extremely awesome!). I am looking at the V8.

Also, most of the info I can find out there discussing issues mainly discusses the 2006...are these issues still prevalent in the 2007?

Thanks!

Ditto, same here. Looking at 2007 LR3's wondering the same thing.

Always done my own work on a 540, M3 and an Allroad, clutch changes, timing belt on the 2.7T, etc. Helps having full access to the on board diagnostics on the BMW's and Audi's as well as Bentley repair manuals.

Encouraged to see that is a code reader for the LR3 out of that place in Cyprus and on line manuals.

However, how realistic is it that we can take care of most of the maintenance and repairs with out going to the stealership?

Thanks

Well, based on our barrage of answers we've received, it seems that everyone has the exact same questions we do

other than the air suspension, or the special tools needed to change the water pump and timing belt, the truck is like any other. Brakes, fluid changes, etc are all normal fair. I have an HSE, and with it many options with I am sure intricate electrical connections all over the vehicle. Someday I am sure some of these will go on me out of warranty, but that is just part of running down a car over its life, my audis of the past had the same thing. The famous lectrical problems that all british motors had in the past are just that, a thing of the past, at least in Rover. The LR3 is a well designed vehicle with as smooth of a ride as a Lexus, but will let you tromp through a river or a deep snow drift. I dont knwow to many vehicles that can do that other than a GX470. But who wants a japanese interior when you can have british. By the way my friends FJ cruiser even with snow tires got stuck trying to go up a snow packed steep driveway in Tahoe a few weeks ago, tmy LR3 cruised right up it without a hesitation.

most rover owners in the US wont dare to even take the skid pan off to do an oil change, but most on this board or other boards are not in that catagory.

I am a new owner of an 06 LR3 HSE and am just starting to dive into this vehicle in terms of maintenenance, i would rather do things myself than have the dealer charge me $165 for an oil change. its just that most of these LR3's are not old enough and out of warranty for owners to have write ups on more detailed work like brakes, timing belts and such, give it a few more years and i am sure there will be write ups all over the net as lease returns get bought up and used. Miels get higher and people venture under the hood.

as a DIYer the only two things you can do yourself are the brake pads and rotors and oil changes. Everything else has to be diagnosed first with the equipment and then you change the parts.

the engines rarely leak and cel lights are rather impossible to troubleshoot without extra equipment like leak detectors and decent machines to reprogram and watch pids.

Only shops with equipment will be able to do everything else. Trust me you will need a full size lift to change everything and have special tools that won't be cheap.
