Default LR3 4.4 vs LR4 5.0 V8 reliability?

I have a 07' LR3 HSE with the 4.4L V8 and it has been very reliable. How does the 5.0L V8 compare to it in terms of reliability? Possible going to go look at a 2011 LR4 but not sure if that engine is going to be as reliable as the 4.4L V8. Thoughts? Should this be posted in the LR4 section?

4.4 is a better motor, hands down.

5.0 has oil flow issues, one overheating incident and the motor is toast, the whole motor, not just head gaskets.

I've heard/read the same as abran stated. Lots of stories of the 5.0L being replaced under warranty. No idea if those issues are specific to years or were fixed.

That said, I had to have my 4.4L replaced after it threw a rod, so YMMV. A few folks I spoke to said it wasn't that uncommon.

ive got both (2012 RR with a 5.0) and an 07 LR3 with 4.4... actually had 3 4.4 LR3's... great motors and not DFI.. the 5.0 is sensitive to fuel and injector clogging (each new one is ~$200) and are a scheduled maintenance item @ 90k i believe..

i'd stay with the 4.4 - solid, reliable, and good.

Thanks. I found this place online ECU Tuning Group | We are North America's leading tuner. and I think I might get a tune from them. They said I would gain 30hp and 25 ft lb tq.

Caveat emptor my friend... introducing a foreign code into the mix sounds like a recipe for disaster, imo.

This is not like Santa Claus - nothing is free; chipping is cheap, reliability, not so.

More HP / More Torque costs reliability.

I have the 4.4 and I try to keep it stock - that means factory plugs, factory oil etc - real boring so to speak, but I now have 12 years and 300,000 km (180,000 miles), with only maintenance required on the engine. I guess that applies to the rest of the 3 as well, but Land Rover's idea of routine maintenance is a lot more than Chevrolet's and spares are not readily available in the junk yard.

The 5.0 is a more fussy delicate engine than the 4.4 and for certain, Ford spun the most out of the engine that they could get and still have most of them get to the end of the four year warranty period.

Ford advertises that aluminum is great in a truck box; you never much hear anyone boasting of aluminum in an engine as "the answer", and that is what our engines are - plus other miracle materials - like plastic.

If you want to soup up a 4 x4, buy a Jeep. The results will be same but at least the junk yards are full of replacement engines - not so, at least where I live when it comes to anything Land Rover.

I had 08 LR3 4.4 V8 HSE for last 12 years and synthetic oil changes every 5k since I got it (~ 50k miles). At 190k miles did not use a drop of oil, had no perceptible wear (noise and performance not changed). The 4.4 is a great motor. Only issue was a stupid plastic bleed valve (LR027661G) and there is a later better coolant expansion tank. Change transmission fluids < 100k intervals, xfer case and diffs regularly and I suspect they will last a very long time.

Due to an idiot driver who lost control of their vehicle on a bend hitting me head on means I'm having to look for new truck. I'm looking at LR4s but no dipstick (to see oil colour and level), the timing chain tensioners, direct injection issues, 5W20 and unreasonably long service intervals of 5.0 and SCV6 are cause for concern for me. I even started looking at GX 460s. They are way better built but ride sucks and not as rewarding to drive as LR3/4 or L322.. I will keep looking..
