LR3 4.4 vs LR4 5.0 V8 reliability?
I had 08 LR3 4.4 V8 HSE for last 12 years and synthetic oil changes every 5k since I got it (~ 50k miles). At 190k miles did not use a drop of oil, had no perceptible wear (noise and performance not changed). The 4.4 is a great motor. Only issue was a stupid plastic bleed valve (LR027661G) and there is a later better coolant expansion tank. Change transmission fluids < 100k intervals, xfer case and diffs regularly and I suspect they will last a very long time.
Due to an idiot driver who lost control of their vehicle on a bend hitting me head on means I'm having to look for new truck. I'm looking at LR4s but no dipstick (to see oil colour and level), the timing chain tensioners, direct injection issues, 5W20 and unreasonably long service intervals of 5.0 and SCV6 are cause for concern for me. I even started looking at GX 460s. They are way better built but ride sucks and not as rewarding to drive as LR3/4 or L322.. I will keep looking..
