Default LR3 instrument panel problem

I have seen e arlier posts about instrument cluster problems (flashing on and off etc) and a quote of $1500 for a new replacement cluster (2009 LR3). Nowhere have I seen an explanation of why this problem occurs. I know of no other vehicle less than 10 years old where this happens. Does anyone know what causes the instrument cluster to fail? This appears to me to be a simple defective product.
thanks

Hi, can't tell you why they fail, but they can be repaired if you can find someone who specialises in this.

Capacitors are often the cause of electronics to fail. I replace them all the time in vintage computers. Even some modern computers suffered from a stolen, and incomplete, formula used by a capacitor producer. They then sold caps to many large companies like Dell and Apple. Caused many computers to die a young death and several recalls. So I would not be surprised if caps were an issue with this. If the problem occurs less or more at different temps, then caps are to be even more suspect. Still, this is just a guess without trying to fix one.

Default before you go looking for flux capicators ...

The odds are that your instrument panel has not failed.

With luck, the single big plug that connects to the rear of the instrument cluster has to be replugged.

There is the view that LR did not make the cable quite long enough and hence in cold weather the cable contracts a bit pulling on the connector.

The fix is to sort of remove or tip our the top right corner of the cluster, unplug the connector and reconnect. The pdf is for speaker replacement but shows the connector on the rear.
