Default LR3 Vs. GX470

Well my wife and I are about to buy a new SUV. We were pretty sure we were going to buy a GX470, until we drove the LR3 Saturday. If we were to buy a LR3 , we would get the HSE with all options, MSRP is around 56K and they are willing to take of $1500 of MSRP to get our business, is this a good price for it? So now we are in a dilema, we really liked the LR3 for its looks, the space inside, the moonroofs and the things it can do. The GX470 is far moe luxurious than the LR3, but the LR3 excells in other areas as well. Does anyone here wish they had baught a GX470 instead? I know that can be a biased question on a Land Rover forum, but I am hopeing for an honest answer. I have been on Edmunds and read some of the comments about reliability issues, that is also a concern. So if you had to do it all over again would you get a LR3 or GX470 and why? I am also going to post this question on the GX470 forum to see what their response is going to be.

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Hello,
I test drove a slew of new SUV's before I drove a LR3 and the new Sport. I had driven MB ML class, BMW X5, Lexus GX, Infiniti FX. All those SUV's didn't compare to the fit and finish and overall quality of the LR3. As far as off-road capabilties, forget about it. The others wouldn't be able to keep up. I currenty drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee and I love it but after test driving the Land Rovers I fell in love with them. I have wheeled with them before and others and it was usually the Jeep and Rovers that ended up waiting for the rest to catch up.

I was thinking about purchasing the new Grands with the HEMI, but after driving both the LR3 and the Sport, there is something about the new Rovers, something intangible. It felt more substancial than even the new Grands. The new LR3 is brillant. Both inside and out. The 4x4 system seems flawless and a "no-brainer" such as the system in the Grands. But I actually take mine out to go off-roading, so the LR3 would suit my needs better, heck even the Sport can "wheel" just fine. It is afterall a Land Rover. Upscale comes to mind even in the more utilitarian environment the LR3 has. Much better ergonomics and materials in the LR3 than the Grand, Lexus or MB. The GX is a fine SUV, but if you plan on doing any off-roading, the LR3 is the better bet. Much better suspension on road and off.

i like the land rover since they are owned by an american company = ford.

lexus is owned by the japanese, toyota, and we all remember what happened on december 7th, 1941 dont we?

jk...

the LR3 as previously mentioned has a great suspension for on and off road. we have had no major problems with ours. we have an 05 HSE black on black.

I have also looked at a RR Supercharged, not the sport, i hate the sports. RR S/C is awesome, no doubt about it. RR has a 5.5" shorter wheelbase than LR3, so better for off road. and it has a 4.2 L 32V DOHC S/C putting out 390 hp.

can't go wrong with cobra horsepower in a 4.2 L

next thing i buy will be RR S/C white with tan interior or F-150 King Ranch FX4

My husband and I did extensive research and test drove the LR3 and several other vehicles before purchasing our LR3 this summer. We both love the look and feel of it. However, I had my heart set on a BMW X5. We made the decision to purchase the LR3 based on finances and features. We got more for our money with the LR3. However, it was in the shop for several weeks when we first got it because of an electrical problem caused by a faulty drain tube and now there's this fuel tank recall. I first learned of the recall at the end of August on this forum. I called the dealership and was told to call back when I got notice from LandRover. I finally got written notice in November, although the recall letter is dated mid-October. I called the dealer and was told to call back in December because LR had not yet sent them the parts needed to complete the recall. I'm thinking the BMW was worth the extra money.

If you are a member of Costco wholesale, you can buy an HSE for 3k over invoiced price saving you a few grand. That's what we did after the dealer told us that there is no discount for HSE's.

I think it all depends on what your tastes are. Lexus is, IMO, clearly the brand for reliability and service, but LR can be good too, depending HIGHLY on the dealership. If you have a bozo dealership, forget it. The one in my area is really big and well established, and I've always had a good experience there (Bellevue, WA). The LR is great, but it's an odds game. You'd probably do better in the Lexus, but the odds can certainly be offset with personal preference, and justifiably so, I think. The GX is great for around town, and too cushy for me. Splurge and get the Range Rover, then the topic is moot.

well if you live in west texas where the closest land rover dealership is 300 miles east, west, north or southwest of you, the lexus dealership is in lubbock, about 115 miles north of you.

i say ford, they have dealers everywhere
