Default LR3 - Will not go into 4 low / stuck in high

Hello everyone!

Getting back into a Landie after flirting with cruisers and Jeeps for the last 7 or 8 years. I found a LR3 at a good price / option ratio, but the seller tells me that it won't go into 4 Low. No other symptoms and I believe they are doing the correct N and foot on the brake procedure. I've read about the switch failing, but I'm curious if there are any other common failures that might present this same symptom. Obviously it's not a good deal if there's a chance that the transfer case is toast. I'm comfortable with all level of auto repair, but don't want to replace a tcase quite yet. Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated!

Thank you all!

You really don't need your foot on the brake, either....just in N and below a certain speed. Can you have the seller take a video or maybe do a video-call with you (FaceTime or whatever) and see what he/she is doing wrong, if anything? What about looking for codes, if they have an IIDTool....?

Not sure if there is a way to check the cause. I'd be asking about the condition of the T-case....is it leaking fluid? When was the last fluid change? Etc....this one is a bit scary. Have they had water ingress issues in the past? Left the sunroof open?

^ What he said. I think 30mph is the limit for a rolling change, either way it will simply tell you if you cant so you really cant hurt anything. The switch is easy to test because if you press it the message center will come up with something. So if pressing the switch does nothing at all, it could be just the switch. But if there are messages yet it faults and won't change, other issues. With that said, replacing the transfer case is not horribly difficult and if I recall they are not very expensive (relatively speaking). But if I bought a vehicle with a possible transfer case issues I would expect about $1,500 less blue book (FYI, I hate blue book and dont go by it anyway).

Edit: If you post the location of the vehicle sits maybe a member could take a look at it.

I may just have to drive out and go for a test drive and poke around while I'm there. Seller says no water issues, tried different ways to shift it, etc. Any idea how difficult is it to remove the switch panel and take a look for corrosion and the connection?

Any other ideas would be welcome!

The center console is not terribly difficult to remove, but not something I would do on a test drive. Most of it just pulls apart (there are a coupe of torx screws - one at the parking brake switch the other opposite under the coin tray).

Selecting Rock Crawl merely prompts the driver to select Lo Range. I'm not sure that is going to help but let's try it!
