New 2006 LR3 SE V6 owner, PO put $15.5K in last year
Hello,
New owner of a 2006 LR3 SE V6 with Heavy Duty option and cold climate packages. It has 169000 km on it (105k miles). Previous owner dumped $15.5k CDN ($12.4kUS) since June 2014. Huge amount of that was labour. Some of it was because of being in the rust belt. Some highlights of things replaced:
- Both Front Lower control arms and hardware
- Front rotors/pads
- Steering rack and lines
- All hard brake lines
- Suspension compressor, tank (rusted out and leaked)
- alternator, drive belt
- starter and flexplate
- tailgate latch
Attached the receipts to give prospective buyers an idea of what they should look for.
Came with second set of rims with winters, summer on stock 18" but the tires are shot. Has hitch and LR cross bars.
Paid $9000 CDN ($7200 US).
Used to offroad in a '91 F350 with Detroit lockers in both axles and 35" super swampers. Probably be a bit before I take the LR3 off road, but it does drive a lot nicer than the F350. Got it detailed and the interior came out pretty nice, has aged well.
Went to dealer today and order a new cowl. Also tried to get diff gear oil. They had no gear oil for the electronic locking diffs. First they tried to sell me the non locking fluid telling me it was the same. Also tried to tell me it was very unlikely that I had it. I had to insist they look it up because I figured there had to be one with a friction modifier in it. They had none in stock and would have had to order in a case (12) at $70/liter. Instead he crossed it to something they could get from local parts supplier for $40/liter. Not sure of the brand. Planning to do the cowl, diff fluid, and spark plugs. If anyone can think of anything else to look at please let me know.
Thanks.

Sounds like a good amount of stuff was taken care of.
Towards maintenance, I would suggest tossing on new wires with the plugs, and a new heated PCV valve, and take a look at, and clean your throttle body. I would probably change out the front diff fluid(and replace the vent cap) along with the t-case fluid while you're at it.
I will say that usually with that kind of service history, you might be looking at something big in the near future. This is based solely on the fact that generally speaking, when a customer invests that kind of money into a vehicle, it takes another large estimate for them to say they've had enough. Not to worry you, but on the V6, pay attention for noise from the timing chains.

Thanks Dave, I forgot about the front diff vent cap and hadn't thought about the PVC valve. I did listen specifically for the timing chain noise, it was very cold here (-25C) when I took it for a test drive. No noticeable noise on cold start, and none since taking ownership, so hope that is a good sign.
I believe the "had enough" moment was the service it was in for when they put it up for sale. If you look at the last bill you'll see they were not charged labour. They had expected to pay it (quoted over $3k) but the dealer for whatever reason chose not to charge it. It was in to have the flexplate replaced, so dropping the trans. If they would have been charged the labour that would have been over $18k in 9 months.
Crossing my fingers that the big stuff has been taken care of.
