started near Rhinelander Wisconsin friday morning . did about the first 20-30% of the 7hour plane crash trail. then skipped up to Houghton and then copper harbor for the night. Saturday morning headed up us41 to try and make it to the "point" of the Keweenaw
ran in to some deep snow, 12-24 inches. only made it 3 miles down dirt road before we gave up . and spent 30 minutes getting everyones cars turned around. good thing we had lots of traction boards!.
then we headed down 26 through eagle harbor and then over to GAY to drive on the "beach" road going to beach had maybe 12" of snow on it. my buddy in the black outback willl take that thing anywhere . well he made it about 100 yards onto the beach and got stuck deep all the way to the sand. had to yank him out.
after that we made a fire hung out and then went back to copper for the night. and then home on sunday.
the LR3 did amazing. other than weird happenings on first day. we had been driving for 8 hours on and off and my cousin was playing music from his phone through aux to USB c cable . after we stopped once to take pictures the sounds stopped working on all functions. FM/cd/aux no sound. thought not much of it . about half hour later we stopped again and when i re started the car the center GPS screen was black also... weird... i joked if this is the only rover thing this does then thats ok. 20 minutes later we stopped and when i went to re start it the first key turn nothing just dash lights.. re keyed up and it started up just fine and all functions of radio and screen worked fine.. anyway we noticed that the coins in the ash tray right under the hvac controls were super hot! like hot to hold! wondering if the heater core was overheating the radio and modules above it? after that it worked fine next 2 days and all the way home.
was quiet the adventure !
Nice trip! Gay brach can be a big trap in winter, the small ponds are totally hidden. You may have been overheating. While the coins are down low, the two ducts at top should have an additional seal added. I had issues with mine, but it would actually tell me on the display it needed to cool down. That is when I found those ducts leak bad as they interface to the outside fascia, the BIG piece you pull off the dash at center, the should. The factory foam had no indents to show it was being pressed onto. Some window seal foam fixed it, never an issue again.
thanks for the pro tip! i run by hvac on floor position most often.. especially on that trip. does your mod still apply? also since we are on hvac topic. when i have it on just floor or just face or just defrost it the air output is good. when i have it on floor and face i have very poor output. is this a common concern?
^ Funny name, eh? I know... there is even a Gay Bar there! And a Gay Beach! The Gay Beach is actually a MASSIVE black "sand" beach and since it is manmade, one can drive all over it and do silly things. Unlike most natural beaches. It will be closed soon though, they are going to remove it because it is all hazardous material.
To the OP, since you are in Rhinlander? you should check out Wisconsin Overland on FB. We do events from time to time, some are yearly like the Christmas Tree Hunt (last weekend), Snoverland (camping, trail ride), trail clean-ups w/camping, etc, etc....
sorry didnt say. im from Iowa! davenport. i just frequent upper Wisconsin and that side of the UP. nothing like driving 8-9 hours just to fk around in some snow!
