Default P0441 with whine

The other day I started my LR3 (started fine) and after a few seconds turned on the defrost. Almost immediately a soft whine developed and I popped the hood and couldn't see anything obviously wrong or tell exactly where the noise was coming from. The engine seemed to be running fine, revved up with no misses so I drove it around the block. The whine occurred with the truck in park or drive and is definitely tied to RPM. The whine did seem to get quieter after a few minutes.

While I was driving the check engine light came on and the code is a P0441.

Last time I drove the truck I went through some pretty deep water puddles in the road that generated a pretty substantial spray when I drove through them but I haven't 4 wheeled in about 6 months.

I don't know if turning on the defrost caused this or was just coincidental. I'm not really sure how it could but I've heard of stranger things happening with Landies!

The only thing I've done so far is reseat the gas cap.

Thoughts?

Might need gas cap replacement - or EGR valve
Can you clear the code and see if it returns?

Hi Doug,
I cleared the code and it hasn't returned so far... I only did a 5 minute drive this morning to work though.
