Default Question About Outer Tie Rod

Good Morning,

I'm changing the inner and outer tie rods on my LR3 and my question is about the flange or sleeve that is part of the steering knuckle but comes off with the outer tie rod. I watched the Atlantic British video about using a puller to get the sleeve off, but I used a torch, tried the puller (bent the puller) and beat the tar out of it with a hammer and chisel and it still won't budge. Does anyone have any additional pointers? Also does anyone have a part number for the sleeve? At this point I'd rather just get new ones rather than fighting with the old ones.

Thank you,

Rob

I wonder when that change was made? My LR3 had no sleeve, my outer tie rods just came right out. I did look up the video and so I then when to the parts catalog I have for 2009 LR3 and could not find it listed with the knuckle or steering components. I even looked in RAVE and found nothing. If no one here has an answer, I would contact Atlantic British directly and see what they can find out.

Thanks Dakota,

I ended up attempting it again by soaking with lubricant the night before and I got them off, but still after re-heating with a torch and using another puller with my impact driver. I couldn't find a part number either. The unusual thing is that in the Atlantic British video he is working on an LR4, so apparently those had them as well.

My guess is the change was made in 2006 or so, not sure. I do recall that there was some sorta geometry change/update but I dont know the details. I wonder if this was something to do with it. Its a rather odd thing to do.

Interesting. Be glad that you didn't have to deal with getting them off. Another interesting tidbit I learned while changing LR3 tie rods is that the driver and passenger thread diameters are different ; at first I thought I had received incorrect parts.

just the inners, outer ends are identical which is why there is just one part number

Correct. I wonder what the rationale was behind that decision....interesting.
