Default Really, an LR3 with false odo reading?

Bought an HD LR3 with 104k miles to part out(bad trans). Didn't bother to check carfax as we planned to part it out.

After getting home and trouble shooting found that the TCCM was bad and causing all kinds of weird behavior. Long story short, invested over $6500 in parts(never mind labor), rebuilt front and rear diffs just to name the 2 biggies...

And now we are ready to sell, have a buyer that has been harassing us to sell to him. Get a price and want to send over the Carfax to him. Low and behold, its entire history up to 2014 it shows up to 185k miles, then in 2106, boom 94K miles!

Called a Land Rover tech and he consulted the entire team at LR, they say it's impossible. If it was done its a super hacker that did it!

Buyer beware.

Truck is all sorted and runs great, but damn, not the money maker we thought at over 185K miles

I firmly believe carfax is trash and only useful in verifying if it has a salvage title or not, perhaps accidents reported... My guess is a shop wrote wrong odo reading and that went into repair history...?

How many times was odometer recorded? You make it sound like it was trending up to 185k up til 2014 with numerous entries?

As for impossible. Im curious as to how its not. One would think with the correct components swapped it would be doable. Or is there some system-wide odometer checksum in place across multiple modules?

AT least 10 recordings leading up to 185, many at LR dealerships.

its impossible because the ECU, BECM, and the IPC(instrument cluster) all record the mileage.

you are not able to swap in all three as the vehicle will not start.

there has to be at east one of those Original in place to code the others to the vehicle.

none of these ECUs are plug and play, all need programming.

Wow, thats messed up then. I wonder how they did it. Do any of the modules have the VIN stamped on them?

Not too long ago, Ferrari was accused of having the ability to change mileage...some clients with Enzos were getting rollbacks. That got squashed pretty effectively! Data on computer chips can always be re-written with the right software.

Abran, have you considered opening a complaint with CA DMV? Could be some unethical resellers in that vehicle’s history and they should get their just deserts! Could it be an issue with the VIN number? Does the region on the CarFax match what you know about the vehicle?

Everything on Carfax looks legit. The seller before the one I bought it from had it during the rollback.

I realize anything can be done for a price, but I had never heard of it happening on an LR3, neither has the local dealer.

Anyways, want to share the info for others. Buyer Beware!

Yes I also take carfax with a very very large grain of salt. This is why; 1. Some shops don't report to carfax. Think mom and pop places, my local indy shop is run by 2 techs that worked at bluff city LR for 20 years and now run a indy. They dont bother reporting repairs and such into a database that could be seen by carfax. 2. Things magically appear and disappear. When I was looking at my 3 I knew it had been in a wreck at some point because the airbag flaps were deployed. (I opened them up to make sure they had new airbags) The strange thing was that there was zero damage to the body, frame, or anything else that you would expect in a crash where airbags deployed. The kicker however? On the carfax the wreck wasn't reported till 2016 even though it happened in 08. Strange considering wrecks are usually the number one thing that carfax will hit on. At the end of the day its a great tool but nothing beats an inspection.

On the note of the odometer.... have you tried driving it in reverse to get the miles off?

Im pretty sure that is how they got it to go from 180k to 105k miles. The lady we bought it from had some kind of neck issue from cranking it around to see behind her.
