Rear interior door handle work around / repair
I've come up with a work around solution to address the issue of a rear interior door handle not being able to open the door.
When I got my LR3 the rear passenger door would not open from the inside. The outside handle worked fine and it was not the child safety.
After taking off the interior door panel I noticed the cable that connects the door actuator and the interior door handle did not move to the correct position when the key fob unlock button was pressed. The cable needs to extend out so the door handles pull will pull the cable to unlock the door.
What I did notice is that the front interior door handles are slightly different than the rear handles. The front handles will open the doors even if they are locked. Therefore they don't need the actuator to push the cable into the same spot for the handle to be able to pull it for the door to open.
With a hunch I sourced a front interior door handle and put in my rear door. Since the pull of the handle engages earlier it works to open the door. When you press the unlock button the door lock still does not push out but I can live with that.
The reason I wanted to do this was removing and the cost of the actuator is a much bigger job. Even if it was just the cable I would still have to remove the window regulator and then the actuator with the outside door handle to be able to install a new cable. Removing the door panel and putting in the new handle was much simpler and only took about about 15 minutes. One note the handles have one slight different how they fit in the door panel but with a little encouragement once it is seated it looks like it came that way.
And yes the rear door can be opened even if it is locked but I don't have kids so it's not a concern.
