Shift Cable Replacement
Hi, fairly new here, been lurking a while though reading… 06 LR3 173k
question- I purchased new shift cable and transmission linkage from Atlantic British. The part swap on the transmission seems easy enough but I can’t find ANYTHING here or on the internet that describes replacement and routing of the new cable itself?
maybe I’m not searching effectively but I sure could use some guidance on the cable replacement.
possibly it’s so simple and obvious that it’s not been covered but any help appreciated!
thanks,

So I don’t have too many pictures but I completed the replacement of the shifter cable today. If anyone needs advice I will tell you what I know… I couldn’t find anything so I just went for it. Not a bad job in the end… I’ll put up what pictures I have later
removed the shifter handle (pressed button, pulled up- mine came off a lot easier than for others, but that’s all you do)
removed all inserts from the middle console around the shifter. Two torx screws, one below the e-brake, another opposite under the narrow insert. The rest is just careful prying and pulling.
Underneath the plastic cover of the console, which now you can lift away, first unplug the e-brake and two other plugs which are fairly obvious. Remove and set aside the lower console cover.
looking down on the shifter itself there are four 10mm bolts clearly holding that component down. And another plug. Remove those and then the clip (forward on the shifter itself) holding the cable to the plastic housing. Just pry that out. It was a little stubborn but no brittle plastic clips or anything… just pry it out. It won’t bend out of shape- mine didn’t anyway but in any case you get another new one with the cable from Atlantic British. Nice.
now you can carefully lift out and turn the shifter itself to see (it’s a bit tight but now you can turn and look at the shifter and see where the cable goes into the assembly) it’s a ball and socket- I just looked at my new cable, comparing it to the old and it’s clear to see how it fits.
A bit of pressure with a screwdriver or panel removal tool and it pops off. That’s it.
there Is a plastic circle bulkhead fitting that you simply pry up and out and now the old cable can be pulled up into the cabin. I had my brother underneath the vehicle as the cable has a spring ‘collar’ that snaps into a bracket near the transmission lever underneath that needs to be pried out and then it’s easy. Just pull it up through the cabin and then feed the new one down and through. It’s much easier with two but one person could do this.
installing the new cable
First! Snap the ball and socket (cabinet) end of the new cable onto the shifter assembly, put it back into position without replacing the bolts and then feed the new cable down through the bulkhead pressing the white(ish) circular bulkhead fitting into place. Loosely assemble the transmission lever and feed the end of the cable through the nut.
important! Make sure that the spring collar (large plastic cylinder at the transmission end of the new cable) snaps into the c shaped holding bracket forward of the lever connection. It takes a bit of force but it’s important. It’s pretty obvious when you are looking at it
then it’s a simple assembly and connection to the transmission lever. Buy all these parts new… cheap and plenty of video out there on that part of the job.
i Hope this helps someone out there… I couldn’t find anything on this particular job and it cleared MANY fault codes and the trans/shifter now works like new. Honestly, like an hour or two job with no lift.
