Hello Land Rover Friends. I have put many hard miles on my LR3 2005 V8 driving back and forth from Baja to my home in Oregon over these last few years. There are speed bumps so massive here and not marked at all that even going over them at 5 miles an hour will kill your car. I seem to hit every one!
This last trip back to Oregon I knew I needed new front suspension . I was quoted $4100 for that and some other issues. I could only come up with $2500 so the mechanic knowing I was driving back to Baja took care of the most important stuff . To my surprise when I picked up my vehicle the suspension wasn’t fixed regarding which replacementsat but $1500 went to a new compressor. My issue is now that I have made my way back to Baja safely but the car is now dragging *** on the ground the front and now the back suspension/shocks are out too. It’s SO BAD. I am going to have to take it to a mechanic here who I trust but no one here knows anything about Land Rovers. So I’m trying to educate myself as much as possible and possibly buy
the parts or have a detailed list of the parts I need. I have both a shipper in San Diego (US address) who drives packages down or if I order from Mexico eBay it might even be cheaper since things are generally less expensive here with my Mexico
My main question is ...IS my BRAND NEW compressor that just got installed a few weeks ago possibly totally busted since it was put in with bad shocks that crunched it on the long drive? I’m a girl! Please go easy on me as I don’t know jack about cars but am trying to learn this rig! I’m guessing I need 4 new air cans/bags or whatever these units are called. I watched a LR3 video from Strutmaster that had a much nicer looking spring unit? Can I get away with replacing the air system with a different kind of suspension. Baja just tears this vehicle apart so any other feed back that might be helpful while I’m having the work done. Would be most helpful. I will be stuck in Baja til I get this work done not that I want to high tail back to Oregon anytime soon but it will be a long 5 day journey so I need to make sure the car is safe and the job is done right. Thank you for any insightful tips!

You gotta give us more to go on than "the suspension is busted." Does the compressor turn on? What symptoms does it give you? What indicator lights or messages are shown? What kind of compressor did your mechanic install?
If you don't off-road the thing, you may consider converting it to a coil suspension. Even if you do off-road it lightly you might consider it. Depends on what all ails your EAS. Also, you should buy an IIDTool....you'll need it if you're making that drive so often.
I’m not sure what kind of compressor was put in besides the fact that I spent $1500 on it. It was at a Land Rover mechanic where they only use Land Rover parts of that helps at all. I’m gettin all the normal fault codes “suspension Fault” , “Special Program’s unavailable” , and “normal height setting only” though I would consider myself lucky if it was at least at normal height. Because I have zero air in the shocks/cans plus probably damage from going over bumps with zero amount of air the bottom of the vehicle is practically touching /scraping the ground. I hoping to hand all the right parts to my Mexican mechanic with a couple videos in Spanish for them to watch.
Thanks for trying to help. No, I can not raise the car once I start it and the fault messages come right on including suspension fault , special programs not responding, and only normal height available. I’m not really looking for any diagnosis as I know the front and back shocks/struts need replaced and possibly the compressor too. I’m just overwhelmed when I look at parts on eBay. I prefer an off brand to save $ and want to get it all ordered correctly because the mechanic (who will not know anything about rovers besides a video I send him) (plus there is a language barrier) is located in the nearest town 2 hours away. I need to minimize my down time w/o a car waiting for parts and want to avoid needing to order more parts aftervakready waiting for parts. I’m in the middle of the desert and the LR3 is my lifeline. Feeling pretty nervous that I can’t seem to find anyone who knows how to work in them down here. After all the videos I have watched I should be a pro but I don’t have the tools nor the strength. It’s all rusted out pretty bad from living next to the sea.
Thanks Guys! 🙏
This helps a lot! I’m liking the air to coil conversion and then I can say goodbye to that darn compressor. There is a 2 1/2” lift kit with the coils too and after some new bigger tires to boot I will be ready to take on these crazy roads down here in the Baja!
