Speed Sensor A Fault
Good Morning. I received the following fault code from the IID:
P0501-62 (E8) Vehicle speed sensor A range/performance - Algorithm based failure - signal compare failure
This is accompanied with a "Engine System Fault" message and "Cruise Control not Permitted".
I've done a search and have come up empty. Can anyone tell me which sensor is 'Sensor A'? I'm assuming it means one of the 4 wheel sensors.

Good Morning and thanks for the reply. I have cleared it several times and it comes back every now and again. Sometimes clears on its own and sometimes doesn't. I plotted live values on the IID this morning on the way to work and all four sensors plotted accurately. I'll keep monitoring.
Hi, I was just wondering if you ever fixed this issue. I'm having the same problem with my range rover sport. It seems to have happened after modifying the tyre size using an iid tool. I'm hoping there is some sort of fix other than putting up with an incorrect speedo, though I haven't checked if changing that back will fix it yet.
I ended up emailing gap diagnostics about it and it turns out there is no solution. It's a limitation in the ecu. I ended up reducing the tyre size in the iidtool to about 390mm I think it was and haven't had a problem since. I have 285/50r20 on my rrs and the speedo is still fairly accurate at that setting.
@DillJLoc I read your post on another forum. Why did you have your VVT and timing chain replaced? Were your symptoms with the Engine Fault present before that was done? Do you have an IIDTool and if so, have you read codes? Autozone won't cut it. Have you looked for any water ingress? Maybe some corrosion in the wiring where the engine ECU resides? Just some thoughts...

Had it in for chains and the VVT sprockets were toast, then the radiator had to be replaced, then the thermostat housing..after $5k and not even a kiss I picked it up....not to mention the shop closed it’s doors 3 days later for good, but didn’t know that till I signed my copy of the receipt. Drove it home and have had the Engine System Fault code ever since.
Only thing is..there is never a CEL when the message pops up. It pops up, it goes into limp mode, I turn off and turn on and the truck runs perfect and no more message. I’ve searched codes every time and nothing but U codes for communication between transfer case module, tire pressure module and ride level control module which are always there.
I replaced the cowl and all A Pillar pieces and spread weathering silicone everywhere to ensure no water. Also put some of that clear gorilla tape around the sunroof, just in case. I’ve replaced the alternator, battery, brake light switch, ignition coil packs, spark plugs, throttle body, clockspring, accelerator pedal, cruise switches, LR4 taillights with resistors, ive prayed for rain and thought of selling my soul to satan.
Took it to my Indy shop and of course the little bastard wouldn’t perform for them, so they said they couldn’t do anything.
Only thing I notice is that it does it after driving a while and I step on the brake and something correlates between all of it and it throws the fault and limp mode. I just ordered a used instrument cluster and am going to program with my Gap tool. Pulled mine and put some grease on connection just in case
I’ll give the ECU a shot. Where is it located again? You’d think I’d know LOL
You've had it rough!! I am not sure on where all the ECUs are. I know some are behind the fuses and battery, but not sure. I have no doubt, though, that someone will be along soon to fill you in....like @abran or @ArmyRover or @DakotaTravler or @bbyer . Sit tight....the Calvary is on the way.

damn! I hope so! All I drive are Rovers and this one...well..I’ve got 10k invested in this now and have only had it 6 months.
