I haven’t posted here in a while, I bought this basket case/salvage title LR3 last year and wasn’t sure if I was going to keep it. I have put a lot of work into it and put it up for sale and haven’t got much response. I drive it here and there but not much. So fast forward, I have bean leading Motorcycle tours this summer in Alaska and have really enjoyed it and I’m going to do it again next summer. I want to drive my LR3 up next year, do some camping along the way. After I do a tour fly my wife up do some touring/camping and then the two of drive home to California. I need to get it ready for the trip and I have ten months to do it.
So I’m looking for some advice of what I should be doing to make sure I have a stress free trip. I don’t mind putting more money into the rig if mean I won’t have problems. Here is a list that have done and what I plan on doing.
done:
A/c compressor
Front wheel bearings
control arm bushings and other components
all new brakes
new dual batteries
two new tires
Plan on doing
all fluids
trans service
water pump and hoses if they look suspicious
belts
all new air struts if they are original. I like the air suspension and want to keep it.
here is the equipment it already has
ARB bumper with a Warren winch
dual battery set up
2000 watt inverter
Pull out drawers
roof rack
ARB lights
johnson rod 2” lift
So any helpful hints/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If your suspension is behaving then I guess I'd keep the rods, but for sure get a GAP tool. I'd include some fresh coolant in your fluid change plans and make sure the thermostat is in good shape and change the bleeder valve out for a brass one. Clean the throttle body and MAF sensor.
Let's start with that. I'm sure others will chime in and if I have other ideas I'll add on.
I'd also check how old time compressor itself is, and replace the dryer for it if it hasn't been done before. Knock on wood, other than water intrusion and rear hatch seizing, my LR3 has been mechanically pretty rock solid for the past 2 years. I need to refresh the suspension, but otherwise would totally road trip it.
