Terrafirma swingaway rear tire carrier
Hey all. I'm just curious if anyone has successfully installed this carrier to the LR3. I came across a post - wish I could find it, which indicated that this carrier was better suited for the LR4. Even though it's advertised for both the 3/4. I'm wondering if LR changed anything on the steel bumper between the two models. The videos I've come across show this carrier being mounted to the LR4. I like the Terrafirma option better than a hitch mount as it keeps the tire close to the rear hatch. Any other options out there that people have installed and like?
Installed the Terra Firma kit on my LR3 just a few months ago. Happy with it. When I had a question, Terra Firma was very responsive. Build quality is solid. Unless there’s something better out there that I’m not aware of, no reason I wouldn’t repeat the purchase.
Thank you! This is great to know as I really prefer this over the hitch mount and needed to hear some feedback. I have a hitch mounted bike rack so with the Terrafirma kit I should be able to have it installed and the rack attached and not stick out 10', lol. I do have an extension for the hitch so it should push the bike rack out far enough for tire clearance. Maybe I'll post a pic or two once I have everything installed and setup. Appreciate the feedback, cheers!
I installed one a couple years ago. It was a PITA. Some of the templates for drilling holes were incorrect and then we couldn't get the arm to drop down into the brass fitting mounted on the bumper. We had to use a brake cylinder hone to enlarge the fitting. It might have been my post that you read. It does work fine once installed however it triggers the backup sensors so I had to pull a wire off one to disable the system. There is a guy in the UK who makes one that does not trigger the sensors. I don't have contact info.
Ahhh, yes, it most likely was your post I came across. I wonder if they have changed things since? I really do like the design and would probably be okay with a few hiccups along the way if it worked out in the end. Did you source yours through Atlantic British? I'm looking at ordering this through LRParts as the pricing seems to the best I've found.
I sourced mine through Atlantic British and frankly did not find them to be very responsive when I had a question, hence the need to contact Terra Firma who were professional and responsive.
My question arose during the installation when I thought I was having the same fitment issue referenced earlier in this thread. Fortunately it just turned out to be a piece of debris getting in the way, that I just hadn’t noticed.
From what I understand, the fitment issues that some were having have been addressed with their manufacturer and resolved some time ago.

If you’re on Atlantic British’s email list, they have random sales. Sounds like you have time, maybe it comes up?
About a week after I ordered mine, it went on sale. Minor, emphasis on minor, frustration when it shows up on your doorstep and then few days later you find out it is now on sale. By the time they returned my call maybe 7 ish days later, it was already on the LR3.
I still order from them if Lucky 8 doesn’t have something, so no axe to grind or anything like that. LRPart is fine, prices generally good. Not sure how shipping costs would look on something this heavy BUT I can’t believe how fast Paddock Spares ships. I get stuff from them once in a while and it shows up as quickly, sometimes more quickly, than when ordering from suppliers here in the US.
