I had a question regarding Tie Rod ends both inner/outer -
I have a 2007 LR3 with 68k and have replaced both the inner/outer tie rod ends not too long ago and now after my 68k service inspection, the mechanic is saying I need to replace. I understand that there is additional wear when running larger tires (275/65R18s) but only after say 4k miles, seems odd.
Does anyone sell heavier duty beefed up Tie Rods and Ends? just looking for some input or if this is normal. I mostly due around town driving with some light to moderate wheeling. I bought it in September 19' and have put about 10k miles on it to date. I replaced the upper/lower control arms when purchased and back in January the tie rod ends. May 9th in Cranberry Wilderness WV. Crazy snow and winter conditions-
Hi James. I saw your post on the other forum too. I only got 18k out of my previous set of tie rods but before that I fared better. I wonder if there wasn't a quality issue in the supply chain for a spell. Maybe give it one more shot. I think there are two styles of tie-rods and I think there is also a TSB to replace with one version or the other depending on how they fail. My memory is kind of foggy and I don't know if one style is any stronger than the other.
Sweet setup, btw...What wheels are those? ...and which roof rack?
That would make sense re the TSB. The tie rod ends i replaced may have been cheapo ones. I will source from Atlantic Brit or Lucky8.
Wheels- They are Rock Star Rims. They came with my previous LR3, I swapped them out & The tires when I sold it to pick up my current LR (my 3rd now known as R3). They had a cheapo plastic star on them, not befitting a LR. I trashed those and just left them with a couple of coats of flat black spray paint. They are not as strong as the steel ones, I have hit rocks when wheeling causing the edges (only 2 spots) to chip. I am unsure if new tires will be able to be mounted when the time comes.
The rack is a Voyager Rack- It is a bit big, particularly where I am. There are a lot of parking garages, so I have to drop it to access height when entering. I had one "oops" and lesson learned!
Thanks for the info,
James
I'm with Houm I do not take it easy on mine and they are finally getting to replacement with almost 50k of my bad driving on and off road. Looks way better without the center caps
Personally I would only get Lemforder tie-rod parts. I could not source outers and went with TRW with Lemforder inners. The threading seems off. While not an issue I will be doing a complete suspension replacement this year so out they go and Lemforders will go in.
I forgot to mention, where you've changed the control arms if you didn't have the vehicle properly aligned this can also create extra force and wear on your tie rods.
