@jafir: Not to be a dick, but I've had my mileage indicator say 999.9 many times, by a timely reset of the calculator; so that pic means little.

Oh...and better get that CEL looked at!

Of course I cannot prove anything but I reset it at the time the trip-o was reset. So that's the average over 134 miles. You'll just have to trust me.

This was on the LR3 I sold. That check engine light was for the VVT solenoid not always doing its thing correctly.

Ahhhh....probably nice to be out of that vehicle, then.

Oh, and I believe your numbers, I was just being a smart a$$. I have just always enjoyed resetting it while idling down a hill and watching it "tilt."

...but I've also attained mpg values on trips of that duration, so I know it's possible.

Default try a tail wind

If you really want good mileage, try a 70 mph tailwind for a hour or so while driving thru the Crowsnest Pass on Highway 3 in the Rocky Mountains between British Columbia and Alberta.

Even with a 70 mph cross wind the next hundred miles or so, I can still make the 400 mile journey home on one tank of premium.

That tends to matter as the portion north, highway 22 along the foothills is so rural that my original 2004 NAV disc still showed the 1890's cattle trail. The blank areas to the left and right on the display depicted Polar Bears and Dragons.

Needless to say, it did not show any gas stations, not because there were none in the late 1800's but because there still are none in the early 21st century.

In the summer, the scenery can be pretty good - the winter, best not be stopping along the side of the trail.

just got my monthly auto ins report on my truck and my driving habits. according to the data collected, I get 14 city / 17 highway, but a combined 20mpg.

er?

my fill-ups lately have been showing me about 15-16 mpg. i do about 70% highway and 30% city. not bad.

i'm less aggressive behind the wheel, so i'm sure that's been helping, but i get a discount if my auto data shows safety improvement.

should also add that on long drives, staying consistently just under 2000rpms seems to also add to the better mileage.
