Default trailer brake controller

Ok, I have switched out my trailer lights to the NON LED lights to work with my 2006 LR3. Thats works great. My boat trailer has a surge brake built in to the toungeso in order to back up you have to use a trailer brake controller or this useless little key that fits in the tounge behind the surge pin. I just bought and installed a Tekonsha P3 brake controller and the matching wire harness (3035-p). The brake controller shows that there is NO trailer hooked up. I can go into the diagnostics and see the voltage coming in but the controller is not seeing anything so it sends nothing out. Has anyone hooked up a brake controller and had the same problems? The only other thing that it could be is my boat trailer has a 5 pin flat plug so I am using a converter to go to the round plug. Could this be the problem? Please help as I have a trip planned for Sunday morning and really would like to have the trailer brakes working. Thanks Again, Blake
