Default Trans Pan R/R

Is there a write up on what needs to be done to R/R the trans pan. I know its a royal pain but is there a list of what needs to be removed exct?

Started on mine the other day and of course allthe exhaust bolts started snapping off left & right son now I have to deal with that too.

Thanks

What are you asking for? How to change the transmission pan?

You probably need the appropriate service manuals, particularly for the filling properly.

I opted for the metal pan, so you don't have to boost the engine, etc. drain, remove bolts, cut neck off filter, slide it out, remove neck. Fit new filter, with metal pan, etc. etc. The metal pan will reduce capacity by about a quart.

Have all the manuals and the filling is no issue just wondered if there was an easier way to remove the pan.

Ill look into the metal pan

Here's a snippet from two sources for the pan. As previously described, is how to do it, without having to unbolt the engine, etc. I think you still need to remove the cross member. It should be fairly easy when fitting the metal pan. Also both outfits have discounted fluid.

<snip>

Spoke to Caren her email is attached below. Basically nice gal busy but thorough. I liked her, she got back to me like she said.
She remembered you but mentioned nothing of leads you passed her way, from what she said you were the last and what sounded like the only person whom she dealt with regarding the Metal ZF pan, so I do not think that anyone has purchased a pan from her.
Hey Check out the price on the ZF Lifeguard 6 fluid though - $12.50 a quart that is a great price and she said it meets or exceeds ZF spec for our tranny. I think she said you bought a bunch from her. Bummer I just bought some before speaking to her for $17.50ish a quart.
Right now I am going to do a flush on the tranny, and not change out pans and filters, but I will change soon. I ran across a ZF guy from CTSC, http://www.thectsc.com where I bought the ZF Brand fluid, they also sell OEM ZF parts and trannys. I sent him a longish email with specific questions regarding my tranny flush idea and also about the tranny Pan. I will forward the response email to you if he replies. I had seen where he had posted on a Bimmer forum about the metal pan on our trannys, there did seem to be a concern, although I am not sure if this is actually across all ZF 6HP26 transmissions or just for the BMW version as it relates to their maintenance procedure documentation. I've attached the content of his post below, basically there's a potential issue with determining what is FULL and over filling the tranny - you might want to look I would like to get your thoughts especially as you have one installed.
ZF part # 1068 103 820 is a metal pan with a removable filter. Heavy use 4x4 guys ( think Aussies in Land Rovers in the Outback) like this for very frequent fluid changes since you change the fluid & filter with the pan staying put for another cycle.
Below notes are from Klaus @ California Transmission ( CTSC ) & I would think rule it out for all but race cars. They also stock the OEM plastic pan w integrated filter & sell a kit w fluid.
Metal Pan info:
Not in US stock but can be ordered from Germany, allow 3-6 weeks.
Price is $274.18 plus app. $10 shipping FedEx ground.
As you probably know, kit includes:
-oil pan
-oil pan gasket
-oil pan screws
-filter
Keep in mind that you are losing app. 1 liter on your transmission fluid
capacity. (More frequent fluid changes required)
The fluid level has to be checked with the overflow plug in the pan, not the
trans housing anymore.
If the filler plug in the housing is used to adjust fluid level, the trans
is overfilled by app. 1 liter and will overheat-fail.

Questions?
If you are interested, let me know. Also, special orders are not returnable.
Best Regards
Klaus
