Question Transmission Fault Limited Gears indicator

As I was backing down the hill out of my driveway today with my 2006 LR3 V8, the Transmission Fault (limited gears) indicator with the F came on.....I stopped, waited with foot on brake, then put it drive to go back up the hill and it just kept rolling backwards. I put my foot on the brake and put it in park and turned it off. Then, had to walk my kids to school.....when I arrived back home, my husband met me to take a look at it. He tried to find a dipstick to check the transmission fluid level, however, obviously, no way to check it from above in the engine area. He then got in the car, turned it on and drove it back up the hill with no problems, and no indicator came on. These LR3's are notoriously flukey, so is this just a flukey thing, or something else? This transmission has not given me one bit of trouble for the time I have owned it (year and a half) and it has 99,000 miles on it. Any ideas or thoughts?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Hard to tell without more information, but if you got a transmission fault, there should be codes stored related to the fault. If you're concerned, I would try to get the codes read and see what happened. If you haven't had any transmission issues up until now though, I would be inclined to simply write it off as a fluke... most likely an electrical fluke as it sounds like perhaps the transmission control module may have lost communication with something.

Personally, I've found that if you have fluid issue (fluid level too low), it will manifest itself through either a transmission fluid temperature warning and/or transmission slipping. Simply not going at all with no prior indications just sounds like the transmission did not get the message to shift into gear... hence my thought of a loss of communication.
