Default transmission fluid change question...;)

Hey guys, just need to confirm with you,..How many quarts does the trans. need when pan/filter changed? The kit comes with 6 qurarts of ZF Lifeguard but Im thinking 6.5 is what I will need ? Thanks for your input.

Also Prev. owner used Pentosin ATF1 and now the pan is leaking...can I add the ZF Lifeguard to top the fluid off while waiting for the new pan/filter?
Are the two fluids compatible? Thanks.

I'm sure the ZF lifeguard won't hurt the trans if you add.

you should use redline D6 ATF when you do the pan. Cheaper and just as good.

If you take off the pan, about 4-5 quarts will come out. The capacity of the whole transmission is closer to 9.5-10 quarts but most of that is inside the torque converter etc. and won't come out if you just take the pan off.

Topping off the fluid is not an easy procedure, and I wouldn't really recommend it. Since you are only getting half the fluid out dropping the pan, you are mixing fluids anyway. If they used ATF1, then you probably have a mix of Lifeguard and ATF1 anyway. I might be a little hesitant to go adding a third fluid in there as well.

See my advice on checking fluid level and topping off:
