Default "Transmission Options Unavailable"

I apologize if there is a thread that talks about this, I wasn't able to locate it via the "search" feature . . . . I'm not very proficient navigating through forums.

I bought my 2005 LR3 two weeks ago (only has 24K miles on it), during the test drive, the dash "binged" and said the there was a system malfunction . . . transmission options unavailable. The sales person said that the serv department must have disabled the options to prevent test drivers from playing with it . . . . I've since learned that, that obviously was not the case.

With my obvious limited knowledge, I noticed that on the terrain response "****" all the indicator lights went out . . . normally the first light is illum'd, after the message, nada.

I took it to the dealer, been there since Tuesday. The serv mgr called today and said "we're still trying to figure out what the problem is" and that "they are in contact with Land Rover NA to help decipher the error codes". According to what he said, there was an error in the T-case and an error in the rear axle. He didn't provide any of the actual codes.

The battery is recent and I confirmed that it was in good working order so I know it's not related to a low 12V power supply . . . . . anyone have any similar experience that I may be able to pass some ideas along to the service department?

Also, I've not noticed that anything else stops working when the system malfunction error comes up. . . . .

Appreciate any and all info.

Don't buy it till it is repaired and you know exactly what was found to be wrong.

Um, well, too late. Probably should have asked more questions to someone other than the sales person. I did however buy the extended warranty which will cover any repairs (parts and labor) for 3 years or 75K miles. . . . now I guess I'll just have to wait, just hate thinking it will sit in the shop longer than I've had it in my garage (bought it with 23800 miles on it, took it back to the dealer with 24010 miles on it).

Seems odd that this malfunction wasn't diagnosed and fixed prior to them putting on the lot to sell . . . especially if it's this complicated. . . .lesson learned.

does the fault put your car into access height and not allow you to raise the suspension??

Will it cover a preexisting fault if the dealer pleads ignorance?

A potentially expensive lesson learned!

Did you buy it from a land rover dealer. Warrantee don't mean squat. Dealers that are not the manufacturer just spitshine everything to get you to buy it. Most likely it will cost you lots of money to fix their stupidity. Lesson is, buy a car from a dealer that sells the vehicles. AKA buy a ford from a ford dealer. Buy a land rover from a land rover dealer. Do it any other way and you are screwing yourself.

Bought my LR3 from Land ROver Denver East. I'm happy say that the extended warranty I bought covering everything (except for the $20 in gas required to diagnose the problem).

Problem was a t-case fault, replaced the ECU and all is good. Took it on a 2 hour dirve this weekend, no more problem. Overall the bill came to just over $300 . . . .

FYI, the problem forced the trans to operate in standard mode only, it wouldn't allow any changes, lower or raise.

No worries now, all is good
