this one is a metal gasket with rubber over mold. Impossible to over torque and supposedly reusable.
I've dropped and reinstalled my pan 3 times using this gasket. Worth every penny spent for it and more.

Ok. I did a dry fill but I am getting confused with the metal pan conversion. There is an article here from "https://www.thectsc.com/products/6hp...it-222-59.html" that says :

*** WHEN CONVERTING FROM A PLASTIC TO A STEEL OIL PAN THE TRANSMISSION SUMP WILL HOLD ABOUT 1 LITER LESS FLUID - YOU ALSO HAVE TO FILL THE TRANSMISSION THROUGH THE FILLER PLUG LOCATED IN THE OIL PAN, INSTEAD OF THE SIDE OF THE TRANSMISSION HOUSING. USING THE FILLER PLUG ON THE SIDE OF THE TRANSMISSION WILL OVERFILL THE TRANSMISSION AND CAUSE IRREVERSIBLE TRANSMISSION DAMAGE ***

Du you guys do this or do we still use the conventional filler plug on the side of the transmission.

Also for the 2 plugs on the bottom of the metal pan , where would I get replacement gaskets? I bought the pan from British Atlantic some time back and already used it once
before I had to pull the tranny and rebuild it. I would rather change the gaskets now before putting it back on the car as I already did a dry fill. The smaller plug had a gasket that looked and felt like hardened rubber. Not sure if I can use a copper washer instead.

Now I have to figure out a safe plan to get the tranny back on the LR3.

Thanks

I rebuilt each of the drums individually and put the same number of friction/steel back in place.

As for the bushings, I think it was Midwest Transmission Supply. It really doesn't matter where because they are all just the same Sonnax bushing kit. I will say, I didn't replace them all because they are not simple to replace, mine didn't seem too worn, and I didn't want to cause more problems by nicking a machined surface to replace a bushing that was still quite tight. Very much a YMMV activity. A good YouTube video (by Gary Ferraro) shows it being simple but they didn't peel out for me. Instead they broke vertically and I had to carefully chisel them out without marring any surfaces. Nerve wracking!

Good luck and as other put it, it's just an auto trans and very straight forward. The parts only go in to the case in one order. The tricky part for reassembly is making sure you have the various axial needle bearings and flat races in correctly. Get one backwards and it's going to be a bad day. Have the exploded view handy and there's almost no way to get it wrong.

Piece of cake!
Thanks for this information, an excellent thread and if I need to rebuild, I'll make sure I document it here.

That doesn't sound right, if you used the plug on the pan the level will be too low. Use the trans fill/level plug as per the manual.

Smaller drain plug on pan is a dowty (sp?)washer. Fill from pug on side of trans.

Thanks. I will fill from the side.
I will take the bolt and look for a dowty washer (if you know the size and where to get to get them , that will make it easier)

Hi all,
05 LR3 4.4 owner who is looking into rebuilding my trans. I'm currently shopping around for parts and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this site ( https://www.shenghaiautoparts.com/sh...ver-discovery/ )( https://www.shenghaiautoparts.com/sh...yundai-jaguar/ )( https://www.shenghaiautoparts.com/sh...8-bushing-kit/ ). It looks like they have great deals but wondering how the quality is. It looks the same as the Cobra rebuild kit mentioned above but is substantially cheaper if similar. Will also be getting the Fel-Pro gasket mentioned above but wondering if the links I mentioned are the parts I need for a rebuild or if I am missing anything.

Thanks in advance!

I don't have any experience with this job but have done some research in anticipation, I'd recommend checking the thread at https://landroverforums.com/forum/lr...rebuild-87764/ to start with. I would be very leery of unknown parts suppliers, I like to do the job once, not fix it again...
