Used 4.4

Used 4.4
So in my search for a great LR3, I’ve come across a beautiful example. But the seller is indicating it will need an engine replacement and to make an offer. Looking online, there are 4.4’s available for roughly $2-3k with around 100,000 miles on them which is less than many of the used LR3’s on the market. So I got to thinking what kind of option purchasing the rig and having a used engine put in it. I’m guessing the major pitfall is having an engine installed that I’ve never seen run so the warranty would be important. Not sure how enforceable most of these warranties are anyway in the long run. Then there is the coat of having the engine replaced and I have no idea what to expect on that front.
Anyway, I’d be very interested in any thoughts or advice you all may have on the subject. A guess at what a mechanic might charge to do the install would be great too.
tks!

Ok, I’ve confirmed it is a head gasket. Is there anything I can ask or look at to try and evaluate I’d the leaky head gasket has caused any lasting damage? Seller indicates no coolant in the oil but there is exhaust coming through the coolant.
I'm guessing a head gasket job will be $4000. What do you think a used engine install would cost for labor?

Head gasket job should cost half that if not done at the dealer.
The only way the overheating cause lasting damage is if the engine was overheated for a few minutes or more. If so, then you’d be looking at warped block and in that case, a replacement motor would be necessary.
you won’t be able to tell if the block is warped without taking the heads off.
what I would do: buy it using the possibility of an engine replacement as a negotiating tool.
then get it home and take the heads off my-self and put a straight edge on the block to see if it’s warped.
if you don’t want to do the work yourself, then buy it and tow it to your local Indy rover shop.
This is all assuming, there are no other issues with the truck

Tks for the advice. I can see online that used engines with normal miles for the year are around $3k. Any ideas in what a shop would charge for install?
considering the above and there will really be no way to know if the block is warped until after the fact, what would be a fair offer assuming all else is satisfactory? Seller does say that the car runs so I should be able to check out so I should to at least be able to check the suspension.

I recently had a newish motor put in my LR3 4.4 and I'm very happy. I purchased this from https://www.nationwideautorecycling....GINE/2009/?k=1
It cost $2100 with shipping. It would have cost less than $2K for install but I needed a few new parts like a radiator etc. A good shop can do an engine swap in 10 hours. I just bought one with excellent compression test. And it's running better than the old motor without a doubt.
