V6 > V8 swap
Hello all,
I'm new to the forum, but a long time Rover enthusiast! I currently have two Disco 2's (2000,2001), a 2006 LR3 (4.4), and a 2006 RRS (4.4 - non turbo). Interestingly, I bought the RRS with a "bad engine" that I planned to swap out, but it turns out their were other much more minor issues which have been fixed and now I find myself with an "extra engine" (the one I was going to pull from my LR3).
Our 15 year old son seems to be catching the Rover bug and would like the LR3 when he gets his license. The truck has a great V8 engine with 19X,XXX miles on it. I'm the original owner, have taken good care of it, and it still purrs like a kitten. Unfortunately due to a run-in with a deer, the body is a bit rough, the panoramic roof glass is cracked, and we lost the steering wheel airbag.
Recently found a deal on a 2006 LR3 with a bad V6 engine, but the rest of the rig is in great shape. I'm wondering if it is feasible to drop the V8 we have into this new truck without major issue. I guess I'd anticipate that the instrument cluster might not be happy due to mileage, MPG calculations, etc. I'm not sure if it's as easy as swapping the cluster or if it would require programming. Has anyone documented this swap? Can anyone comment on the feasibility of doing this?
I've got an Alldata subscription to the vehicle and on paper it seems doable. I've never done an engine swap, but I have a very well equipped home garage and have done some fairly complicated DIY vehicle projects in the past. I just didn't want to get into this and find out I need an expensive scan/programming tool. Or if I will need one, I just need to budget that and talk to my localish independent Rover repair shop and see what they'd charge.
Thanks for any guidance!

First, its not just engine swap. You need 4.4 engine ecu with it to control the engine. Once you transfer 4.4 ECU into your 4.0 V6 truck it will NOT start. Immobilizer adaptation needed, whole car programming. You have to tell you truck to treat it as 4.4 V8, not 4.0 V6. Transmission programming because different engine has different torque and stuff...Can't say if it's 100% possible, but I think it is. Is it worth it? Can't say, it depends on your circumstances. I think local indy would not be happy to try to marry your engine to V6 truck. Or simply to say it will be crazy expensive. Try Copart or IAAI for LR3 with bad engine. Will be cheaper and way less headache.
Good luck!
