Hello, 2005 LR3 V8. Approx 150 miles.
After 15 minutes of driving my HDC fault system unavailable is coming on.
volts are good (13.7 - 14)

tried reading codes on GAP but they are not coming up for that fault. Once turn the car off it clears and works fine.

I did have new rear upper control arms installed last week and need new tie rod on front coming shortly. Alignment is not 100%. I’ll go in for alignment once tie rod is in.

could this be the issue? A warning from my steering not being exact?

Yes, any steering geometry that's not in spec can cause this along with the steering angle sensor being out of whack.

 

Thanks for the reply. Just did a steering recalibration with my GAP. See if that makes a difference.

 

If it comes up again after that, you really need to watch voltage readings with a proper meter. HDC faults that present with no codes are almost always voltage related. Example being when a battery is on the way out. You may not have any warnings, but on startup you will get a few. Yet they go away and generally dont store any codes and things can return to normal. This is because HDC is sorta like an umbrella over so many systems it relies on, so if one of those goes it it screams at you.

 

If it is an alignment issue (and it has been for me before), when you get it done, make to sure to emphasize that they need to center the steering wheel, and it needs to be done with the suspension in tight tolerance mode. If the steering wheel is off center even a little, it will throw a fault. After the alignment, do the steering angle sensor reset.
And Dakota is right that the HDC system can point to other system problems - it's rarely ever a problem with the HDC system itself.
It can also point to tires not being the same diameter at all 4 wheels by the way.

 

Thanks for all the replies. I had a loose inner front tire rod as well affecting tire wear. I’m guessing this was the culprit. I did a steering recalibration yesterday and the warning has not come back.
