Default 2011 LR4 Oli Leaks: OK to buy?

Hi all,

I looked at a used 2011 LR4 with 100k miles. It looked like it was in decent shape and drove well. I noticed a good amount of oil (not puddles, but very wet) in the engine compartment on the passenger side. Also underneath the skid plate was wet and what I think was the transmission (could have been a t-case) was also quite wet.

Is this normal or could be fixed or should I avoid this purchase?

Thanks.

Definitely not normal. My 2010 has never had a drop of oil visible anywhere. You are taking a massive risk to buy in that condition. Could be a bad seal and an easy fix. Or could be thousands of dollars btw engine and transmission

I would also question how well looked after a vehicle is that they haven't bothered to fix it...

My advice - have the seller repair it first.

Great, thanks for the response. It is from a "used car lot" type of place, so it is possible that someone traded it in for cheap just to get rid of it instead of fixing it. Very glad I asked. I had a Disco II back in the day and some amount of oil in the engine compartment was pretty normal as far as I remember.

No problem. Definitely not normal and like many engines these days they are quite sensitive to oil starvation. So if you're not sure it has been cared for and if it might have run low on oil it could be in bad shape

Enough of them around that I'd keep looking. That said mine has been outstanding and very reliable (2010 model) so if you find a good one you will be very happy with it
