Default 2012 LR4 Tailgate Won’t Open

Can somebody walk me through how to get access to the trunk actuator when the upper & lower trunk sections won’t open. I have viewed several UTube Video’s about getting to the actuator but they do not go into any detail of getting the plastic trim and carpet panel open from inside the back of the vehicle. Looking forward to some help. Once I can get the trunk open I should be able to complete the repair.
Thanks.

Did you get this resolved? We went through the same thing on a 2011 LR4, but it was functioning intermittently. I can provide more thoughts, if it is still an issue.

I was able to get this resolved. The hardest part was getting the carpet panel removed to access the actuator cable to release the rear hatch. I found a very good video online by Atlantic British that walked me through the procedure. It’s not as easy as it looks on the video. I ended up going to a local bodyshop and borrowed some carpet tools to pry the carpet panel from the hatch so I could release the tailgate. Once I got the carpet pulled apart replacing the failing actuator was very simple and it works fine now.

i have the same issue. Tailgate won’t open. I have pulled the carpet back and have access to the actuator cable but when I pull on it nothing happens. It looks good from what I can see. Maybe just need a new actuator and the cable is ok? But how do I get the door open to pull everything apart?

cheers Ryan

For the inside, just pry on the latch on each side and it will open right up. Then you can remove the carpet panel without any damage. Also you pill on the cable itself, not the black cable housing - just to be clear.

As far as pulling on the cable, in my 2011, I found the easiest way to do it was to push on the metal clip where the cable housing ends and the cables connect to the actuator. I can get two fingers on it by bending my hand through the opening and apply enough pressure to get it to pop. I am sure others have better methods. But once our latch started to fail I got it open and removed the carpeting so I would have access to it until I get it fixed.

While this thread is a few years old, I notice that you're still active on the forum. Can I confirm that you were unable to open the top and bottom part of the back hatch, and that your post suggests that you were able to open the TOP hatch by prying on each side from inside the vehicle? If this is right, I'd love to give it a shot. Can you explain the "prying" - do you recall what you pried on and the direction of rotation? I'm trying to help my someone and I'll get to drive back out to follow your direction. This just sounds much more preferable than bunging up the carpet trim like I'm seeing in the videos.
Thanks!
